I finished Dhalgren about a month ago. Good book but a bit of an endurance test to say the least.

In Watermelon Sugar - annoying hippie bullshit for the most part. Some of the contrasts between the surrealistic dopeyness and the stark violence is really jarring which I enjoyed.

“Filth” - Irvine Welsh 10/10
Was a bit tedious at times but the crescendo to the end more than makes up for it. Far more depressing then I would have thought.

The Acid House - Irvine Welsh 9/10 a few of the stories felt like filler but most were great. “A Smart Cunt” ends with a sickening thud. He really seems to have a knack for that.

I finished the trilogy a few days ago. I enjoyed it. The sense of dread felt genuine and the emotionally manipulative stuff in the second and third book managed to be depressing. The ideas of dissolving identity is fleshed out much more. Don’t expect any resolution into what is actually happening if you read the rest of the series. It’s asks 100 questions and answers none of them.

Have you ever read the Kalevala in full? And thought about what it means, like the true meaning
