I wonder if the presence of that guy is coloring people's perception of what they're hearing.

Anyway, I listened to the whole thing, and it's like... Louis CK doing an impression of himself? Jokes about farting out your father's cum from laughing too hard, that sort of thing. I laughed a few times, but for the most part it just sounds like he's out of ideas and doesn't have anything to say anymore.

Yeah, okay, but my post was actually based on research.

isn't the club where comedians tend to suss out what works/doesn't as they develop a new set? you can't judge it any more harshly than you would dropping in on a band rehearsing songs for their next album...
On the topic of PC, Eight Bit Alien wrote: Mon Dec 31, 2018 11:03 pm It usually refers to proposed linguistic or behavioral mannerisms, affected in order to avoid offense towards groups at risk of marginalization or oppression

so like if being liberal is "it's wrong to club babies to death just because they were born in inuit families"
then being politically correct is "if I do this special dance every morning and tap my forehead three times every time I talk about an inuit baby, it won't rain tomorrow and I'll stop balding and my wife will come back"

iirc
yes thank you james. my understanding of political correctness and its origins is along the lines of: formal rules that have to be invented and enforced because people are generally too callous or considerate to follow the golden rule. being forced to call people by their preferred pronouns is a form of political correctness, to be sure, but such a mandate would be pointless if people tended not to be assholes.

I don't think PCness is what's noteworthy about the initial LCK clip we were discussing, and I don't think it matters if it's more or less "offensive" than his earlier stand-up. what IS relevant is the spirit behind the jokes - this is, afaik, the first time he's abandoned a left-leaning undercurrent. I've tried to revisit his sketchiest bits, and none of them even approach the intent of the stuff in that clip. "it's great being a white guy" addresses enduring racism/oppression; addressing the psychological implications of hearing "the n word" and then thinking "nigger" is neither here nor there. if any of his older bits would inspire the "build the wall" crowd to pop boners like his latest stuff, I'd love to know about them...

I was thinking more just your dick size, but sure.

I dunno. Sussing out the exact intention behind a joke like that is really difficult. If you listen to the whole thing, he's already cracked a few other jokes at this point about him just being an old fart and he talks about his kids leading up to it in a way that just makes it appear far less pandering to right-wingers out of nowhere than it comes across in isolation. Plus he's not really making fun of the idea of gender fluidity, just the obsession over pronouns and that that seems like a weird thing for young people to be concerned with when they should just be... I dunno, wasted all the time, I guess. It's a dumb joke and profoundly uninteresting (and like you said, the controversy is caused more by people just refusing not to be dicks unless you give them a manual, and then complaining that the manual has too many pages), but if you listen to the whole set, it's a really, really big stretch from this to "Louis CK goes full shitlord" or whatever it was that I read somewhere looking for the whole thing, and you know they're basically going to call him Hitler now, and gleefully.

Yeah this is basically what I came to say. I only listened to five minutes of it and it's not great, but there's a couple funny elements at least, and I bet most of what he does in this would have never made it to a special anyway, beyond the base idea. There's a reason (well, a couple of reasons) why most stand-ups hate having these sorts of sets recorded and released, and it's because the material is totally unrefined and unfinished, and doing these sets is how it gets refined and finished, by seeing what works and what doesn't. So if you hear it in advance and judge it based on that, you're hearing it with all the fat and such still on the bone. It's not really fair at all to the art. "Hey this painting that the artist is 10% finished sure sucks !"

To Fobtuse's point, though, he says he had a shit entire year and lost 35 million, and he IS being shunned as a sexual predator by a significant portion of his peers, so it's hard to imagine he came out of that unscathed mentally and emotionally, and it's not THAT crazy to think it's having an effect on his quality

Hell, even before all this happened, his last special was certainly not his best, and his show was definitely not my favourite

But if the painting is of something dumb, it'll still be dumb when it's done

No I mean like the problem with screwdriver isn't that they aren't good musicians or didn't spend enough time rehearsing.

Has anyone seen I Love You, Daddy? I noticed the whole thing is on YouTube. Louis CKs hitjob happened right before this was going to get released.

protestors at a san jose louis ck show - one of 'em got punched in the face. so apparently saying "louis ck is a bad man" is more punch-inducing than horde of rich white kids shouting "build the wall" at a native american vietnam vet.

this article largely seems intent on determining whether or not his set was funny or not, which isn't really the key question here?
"if you ever need people to forget that you jerked off, what you do is you make a joke about kids that got shot"
unrepentant, minimizing, etc
