Also, if you convert a road bike, please do everyone a favor and do it properly. If you're going fixed (which is kinda dumb if your bike has vertical dropouts) please get the proper hubs. Don't do that gimp-ass loctite suicide hub conversion bullshit because it is NOT safe. If your cog comes loose, best case scenerio is that you just go over your handlebars. Worst case is that you're in traffic and you can't stop.

If you're going the single speed freewheel route, there's a kit called a singleator which replaces your rear derailleur. They're about $40, and not that difficult to install.

I'm sorta into gears (hence brakes) as opposed to "being one with the road" or whatever cockamamie excuse people give these days for riding fixed in the city.

how do people with fixies manage to get up a hill? i almost exclusively us the lowest gear of my mountain bike, but every once in a while i have to gear up, otherwise i couldn't make it. especially, if you're going slow and caught off-guard by an incline.
so, how often do you fixie-guys push your bikes uphill?

My weekend warrior Eddy Merckx - (some of you may remember it as the pride festival on wheels, though that might get toned down when I build my epic new wheelset)



My Miyata 1000! I got it for a song, set it up as a singlespeed and commute to work/gym/grocery store with it. I'm checking out some guy's box of parts a block away in an hour to get some bar-end shifters. Then this will be restored to its full touring potential (I have pretty much all the original parts) and bike camping will be done this summer.

I fucking love my bike. Even more now than when I first got it. If anything ever happened to it, I would buy the exact same bike again. At some point I want to change out the handlebars, but otherwise I think it's perfect for me.

That is almost exactly what I was talking about. HOWEVER. You are a pretty light guy? I think you could ride that for a number of miles and Be happy. But look down the road for an investment on new wheels, pedals and Other parts which will be somewhat cheap to replace. Those have a Nice steel frame and I see people riding on them all the time and they seem happy with it. I do know after reading lots of bike forums that the components are just meh (not even in a bike snob sense, just in a limited lifetime sense).

i'm 5'9, 180, but muscular, not fat. but summertime fun will get me back down to around 165 where i normally am.

I think the last time I posted a pic of my baby, I still had the old fork, so here's the Pace and the rest of the bike:



I crashed it recently, though, and the fork may be a goner. We'll see.

I went home the following day because my knee hurt like fuck and the bike was trashed. I'm still pissed because this was an expensive guided tour and the pics from the second day look like everyone had a blast, but I was in no condition to go for another six-hour ride.
