Fuck them, let them burn. No great reward without great risk, and they took the big risk and lost. I just hope the people that'll be unemployed by their collapse have some backups

Yeah.

http://finance.yahoo.com/q?s=bp <-- what I was looking at

I'm guessing tomorrow it'll go down a lot more? Maybe not.

Edit, oops:

"It's a disaster for BP and its shares, which continued to plummet Tuesday. The stock has lost more than a third of its market value, or about $67 billion (and counting), in six weeks, Reuters reports."

Ouch.

Obama thought the sky was clearing? Oh well.

not a big enough dip...

and hardly a big risk, given the extremely low likelihood of a failure of this magnitude.
I just hope the people impacted by this, such as those who used to make a living off of fishing the gulf, are compensated in full.
...even though I know most of them will blow any settlement winnings in a couple of years before filing for bankruptcy, anyway.

No, this is too big of a deal for that to happen. white people were affected here, and not just white people but 'mericans.
I'm not saying they'll be fully compensated, but they'll be compensated enough to shut up about it

I don't think anyone will even know how much it will be.

On the bright side: we won't have to worry about Palin anymore.

I've been glued to the tv for the last several weeks watching/hoping to see something positive transpire. It's beyond depressing because it just keeps getting worse. I've literally been brought to tears a few times while watching all the coverage.
And, for the record, I was watching a special last night that detailed the pay-outs from Exxon-Valdez that people (white...'mercan) finally got just recently. This is after many had already committed suicide, gone through bankruptcy, divorce. There's no monetary value for 20+years of your life ruined.
The only positive spin on this is exactly what's already been alluded to in this thread; it may actually cause a paradigm shift in this country regarding sustainable and/or alternative energy. FINALLY. If they'll actually keep this shit IN THE NEWS and stop letting Lindsay Lohan divert the public's attention, that is.

like we'll stop drilling for oil just because we're not using gas as widespread. plastic doesn't just magically appear, you know. and don t give me that recycling bullshit: any plastic that has to deal with any sort of stress must be recycled 75%/25% with virgin plastic.

Actually, I think we should try to use what oil we do drill for primarily for useful plastics. We need plastics for medical supplies, not plastic bags and bottled water.
edit: I also don't think we'll ever get off gas as long as there is oil in the ground...unfortunately. But, I do hope this incident will make people think more critically about the industry, because right now, many just don't think about it at all.

For years, the Saudis thought our petroleum was best used in plastics as opposed to vehicle fuel. Granted, that's like your crack dealer telling you that you're better off selling it than using it.

I think petroleum is still bad for the ocean if you wait until it is in plastic form before you dump it in.

the thing is you cant just make only plastic out of oil. when refining, it will ALWAYS make some middle distillates ( kerosene, some gasoline, some diesel) jet fuels, etc. and some will be useful for plastics. but not most of it. so in order to get your plastic, you end up with the rest of the fuels. sure, they add additives in order to change out the ratios, but that's all they can do: change the ratio.

as long as we're making plastic, we'll have gas. as long as we have gas, people will keep using it if only to keep from having to classify it as a hazardous waste.

BP (BigPricks) is still trying to put that cap on; whether there's legit reason for optimism is another matter.
