Played my first games of D&D actual recently and they involved both of these styles equally. Had a blast

But I imagine it depends a lot on what specific players respond to more and just how your DM likes to set things up?

A thought eater is an emaciated grey platypus that lives in the Ethereal plane but feeds on the intelligence of beings in the physical realm (Dave Trampier from Gary Gygax’s AD&D Monster Manual, 1977)

Fvbtvs, where are you getting these gigantic maps? Are these official or homemade stuff? Do you ever DM? If so, how much of your adventures are pre-made and how much do you just make up on your own?

Also, what edition do you play? One of my friends is an old head who swears by 2nd ed but the only games I've played so far were 5e

google/pinterest/reddit/deviant art. maybe 50/50 has been old official tsr stuff and other peoples homemade stuff from searching but honestly i dont know. i'd have to go post by post. i just started running again for my friends last month on roll20. i've never run any pre-made stuff. i like to look at modules and other systems and stuff and maybe snag something here and there to drop into a game but thats it. i'm reading the burning wheel system now. game design is fascinating in general

5e. i started running right when 5e came out for friends that i've known for decades. we dabbled in all the editions (including 4th) when we were younger but i'd say they all played a metric fuck ton more without me (i was always too obsessed with other shit especially girls). we played deadlands/warhammer dark heresy as well. something about 5e really clicked for me and my group though once i started running and i ran for about a year and a half straight. twice a month. 2 campaigns. took about 2ish years off and we're back at it again. same group but we're a little more spread out now so we're reviving it through roll20 a little bit at a time. i could go on and on about the difference between rolling real dice and sitting around a table vs. roll20 and whether the weird feeling of the thing still working in your brain is actually effected but yeah. we're a very low bar cro magnon type group who dont do voices or role play or any of that shit. a lot of competing for resources and cut throaty asshole behavior

2e is awesome. i plan to get a 2e dark sun game going with the same group eventually now that i've proved to them that playing through the computer is a thing that works and we dont have to turn our noses up at it. dungeon crawling is almost heightened if you use the real time lighting and fog

believe it or not since ive discovered roll20 i flirted with the idea of running a game for relapsers only which im certain would be amazing :awesome: but i honest to god dont have the time i'd like to run for my group now.

Currently playing a tabaxi swashbuckler in a pretty loosey goosey RP-focused 5e game with some assorted miscreants (mostly noobs like myself), and playing a human war-mage in a combat-focused 3.5 game with another group (who have obviously been playing for years.) Christ 3.5 rules are ridiculous. How does anyone ever remember all this shit? Rulebook section on grid combat alone is about the same amount of pages as 5e's entire game ruleset. Anyway, I'm having fun with both groups regardless, and me and the missus may start our own group soon. Got an aarakocra shadowmonk character ready to go for that one. Might investigate Savage Worlds and Dungeon World for ideas on simplified mechanics. I'm leaning more towards speed and ease than endless rules complexity. Also, occasionally playing Dungeon Crawl Classics with a group from the local comic shop, but really more interested in the forthcoming Mutant Crawl Classics. Just found a fanmade Phantasm RPG online too so you know I'm gonna be all over that. And thus concludes the nerdiest fucking post I've ever made on this board, which is saying something. Cheers.
