“Jan and I have a safe word. If one of us thinks things are going to far, they say that word, and the other person has to stop. Although last time, she pretended she didn’t hear me.”

Michael is describing rape. Sexual things happen to Michael that he does not want. But it’s not describing rape in the sense that it’s critiquing Jan or pointing out that she is a rapist (though it does contribute to his characterization of her as abusive later on in the episode). It’s making fun of Michael’s rape, of the idea that men can be raped. It’s again using rape as a cheap joke.

I am confused by all this. I don't know if the entire idea is to sit in front of the TV on Thursday nights and notice every rape or if it's just incidental!

Why are you even debating this in your mind? Should have just said, "check out this stupid bitch" and just posted the links.

Conditions for a Anti-Oppression Joke

IF a character on a television reflects or reinforces the kyriarchy through problematic/loaded language or actions.

AND the action/language is critiqued or rebutted by another character

AND said rebuttal/critique is framed as reasonable and valid

THEN the joke constitutes critique of kyriarchy in society.
gah, so according to this stupid fucking feminazi cunt, if I want to remain the upstanding citizen the board knows me to be, I'll need some square to follow me around rebuking every off-color comment I make?

this has to be her most hypocritically labyrinthine post:

watch me post about my diet and obsession with my body image with an impossible level of self-awareness regarding how little I or anyone should be caring about either such thing

for anyone trying to move social norms you have to be waaaaaaaay out there with your expectations and ideals - if you want to move 1% of jokes from ambiguous-on-oppression towards unambiguously-anti-oppression, maybe you need 1% of people out there to be apparent nutjobs like her who are claiming there should be NO ambiguous jokes. it's an embarassing and vulnerable place for her to be but sometimes I think it's the only way anything shifts

I think she's right to be thinking about these things... but she's not the best critical thinker like you pointed out - the "diet" blog I linked above is especially demonstrative - she's not leading by example there, basically still operating under "fatphobic" or whatever oppression

I don't think any political or social crusade is officially in cranky geriatric retirement mode once it's taking shots at pop culture or fucking jokes.

LOL at Looney Tunes riffing... but... yeah man it's easy to discredit people like her through mockery all day - but why? to uphold the status quo? I know you're up to your neck in people like her but you have to remember that not every city is Boston...

Word.
Pisscubes wrote:And why be so fucking preachy about it?
I think this is out of sheer necessity - it's nearly impossible to have a light demeanor when telling people that the joke they just busted a gut over oppresses women, right? I'm trying to think of hyper-progressive "activists" (?) who have a sense of humor and I guess I'm drawing blanks. The Daily Show does a great job with a gentle liberal agenda, but that's in a different class IMO.

A guy walks out on stage and is indifferent to the beautiful tapestry that is modern day diversity, possibly not laughing loud enough at an NPR joke at the Tea Party's expense, and then he learns the error of his ways only to be ignored by the rest of the people smarter than he and he dies alone and sad. Cue laughter. But quiet, respectful laughter.
I laughed hard at this.

And I had to go look up kyriarchy.

Way to tell some dude you never met that he's being insensitive because he used the word "child molester". Grade A work-- you've made the world a better place, no doubt. :wank:

I'm impressed with your restraint on that one-- probably a good time to have restraint cause you clearly won that argument without resorting to something like, say, "Man, you'd think that rape would have given you a thicker skin but nooooooooooooooooo...."

i've known and loved a lot of extremely feminist/activist minded girls in my life and they always come at you with absolute overwhelming force in order to subdue you into thinking you committed a monstrous act and you can really fall into their traps very easily if you get insulted easily and don't restrain your barbarian impulses.

it's always on the internet too. backwater comments sections and forums and bullshit. most places where people are engaged with safeguarding womens rights from abuse and exploitation and all that shit, yeah they probably are sensitive to shit but theyre also working at the issue and they don't pick the absolute wrong fights every single time because it isn't some stupid exercise in discourse or whatever

people say i'm a downer but what has to happen to someone to completely obliterate any sense of humor at the risk of something being offensive? how can anyone live a life so serious?
