It was a pretty entertaining spectacle, but was a little too surface level. We are left without any meaningful or satisfactory resolution to all the Azor Ahai/The Prince Who Was Promised/Lord of Light-stuff that has been teased for the past 7 seasons.

It's just becoming more and more painfully obvious that the show can't cash the checks its earlier seasons have been writing. So far, things that have paid off reasonably well have been... Brienne's knighting and Bran telling Theon he's a good man. Gamespot is really the last website I want to be agreeing with, but the article does describe the problem pretty well. Most of the big stuff turned out to have gone nowhere, and they're struggling to make the character arcs pay off as well.

I mean, it's not terrible - the episode was a bit exhausting at times, but I did like the surreal horror movie vibe and the fact that they took their time building dread and tension before the battle, but, I mean, really, this is it? The Three-Eyed Raven and the Night King meet up for a quick staring contest and then Arya Ex Machina and it's over?

Sigh.

I only watched this season because we put a TV in our bedroom, but Jon Snow's master plan of yelling at an undead dragon was the funniest shit ever

And maybe it's because I'm 100% on the outside here, but after that—what appeared to be a literal existential battle—how can anything else that follows not feel like a gigantic step down in terms of stakes? Whatever, I'll probably play Candy Crush through the next episode

Well, obviously they figured what most people have been watching the show for has been the human conflict, so they wanted to give that stuff enough space, i.e. two episodes before the inevitable hour-long epilogue. You have to realize that the zombie stuff was really just sort of a vague idea that nobody took seriously for most of the show and only ramped up towards the end. The more I think about it, the more clear it becomes to me that having this all wrap up in a big battle was never going to work. I really thought Sam was going to pull some clever trick, but now he mostly just got to sob and shit himself.

Has the internet skipped forward to the part where we blame feminism yet? Seems kind of an obvious way to go with this one.

Oh, notice also how literally not a single white walker was killed with a dragonglass weapon, rendering that entire subplot meaningless.

I need to stop thinking about this now, I'm ruining it for myself.

I'm surprised you were even able to tell. the whole episode was darker than the inside of an asshole on my screen.

The dragonglass seems to insta-kill the wights as well, which I suppose explains why they were able to take them down so quickly in this episode and in s7 e6, while it was nearly impossible for Jon and LC Mormont to kill the wight who wakes up in Castle Black back in season 1. Of the many gripes I have with the show, this is not one of them.

It was pretty fucking dark, I had to crank up the brightness on my TV to near max level after a few minutes into the episode to be able to see anything.

Well, fine then. At least that means Sam wasn't completely irrelevant to everything.

I'm glad they built up a conflict for 8 seasons that was just there to turn secondary characters into mincemeat so the story can focus on the *real* plotline.

If Cersei becomes the end victor because Jon Snow really just made her conquest easier by defeating the one army that could stop her I'll give the show a thumbs up. I doubt that will happen though.

I too couldn't see shit.
That, me being a weirdo, and me not remembering every little detail are probably why I thought it was mostly tedious. I just wanted to go to bed on time, but then it took them 75 minutes to build up a sense of hopelessness?

What was bran even doing? Most interesting character, and he got one scene of him being a crow for no purpose.

The whole series is about tactics and strategy and they get to the end and they put tyrion in the nursery and the plan is for the naked horse people to charge into a blizzard in the dark.

Most people don't know how to adjust their TV picture.
Google picture settings for your TV model, and spend the 5 minutes to go though every menu and sub menu.
My last TV would not have handled it, but it was low end in 2013 when I bought it.

Episode had great scenes, terrible story.

Hope cersci wins.

I've seen more people accusing other people of being sexist for saying the ending was a weird copout than people being mad at a woman (zero people)

I saw someone call someone an incel because of it

the absolute state of 2019

Okay. Interesting. Maybe it's because GoT has always had a pretty sizeable female audience. You know, blah blah, Khaleesi.

All things considered I'm actually okay with Arya Ex Machina. Her plotline was one of the most consistently good parts of the show, and unless she did something big in the end, it would've been just another thing that happened for basically no reason. I still say the way it was executed was retarded, though.

i thought the first half hour was a nightmare, with everything that i hate now about this show amped to 11. maybe the worst this show has been, although i feel like i say that about something in every episode now.

....bbbbut i actully thought it recovered somewhat nicely. I loved the tyrion/varys scenes, reminded me of their banter from seasons 2 and 3. And while there was still plenty of characters doing stupid things ( how many fucking times is tyrion going to try to reason with cersei before realizing it doesnt work) there was some nice setups and surprises.

Well, I've had a week to come to terms with the fact that the showrunners apparently never thought the Night King was all that important, and if you're willing to accept that, this was actually a pretty good episode. Tyrion is still basically unrecognizable and Tormund is pretty much just Count Cringula now, but otherwise it's about as close to the clever politicking and scheming of the earlier seasons as you can reasonably hope it'll ever be again. At least all that foreshadowing about Daenerys really being Dragon Hitler Lady seems to be going somewhere after all. Also, about as long as the previous episode and nowhere near as exhausting.

yeah i hated it

tyrion and varys scenes were fine. tyrion appealing to cersei's humanity was cool too

but aside from that it was wall to wall what the fuck

I can't wait for the finale to end with a "5 Years Later..." montage.
