Man, that Dixon track is fucked up. I'll have to get acquainted with him a little better.

I dig that first Kirk clip, mostly for Tyner. He's probably the most easily identifiable pianist I can think of. I've never been able to get into any of his solo stuff, with the exception of some of Sahara.

Are the Youtube tags fucked up or something?

Saw these guys play together a month or so. My favorite drum/sax duo of pretty much all time. I can't say enough about Vandermark. He can do anything.

Nope, but I've seen them play together here a couple times. Seeing Brotzmann live is usually a good time, but I'm not a huge fan and always think he gets outshined by the people he plays with here.

I'll give that Woodcuts track a go when this Grade 5 class is over.

a few weeks ago I stopped into the downtown music gallery, this amazing basement shop in nyc, and asked if they had any recommendations for albums featuring this english bassist, john edwards. I had picked up a clean feed record a few years ago called 'a glancing blow' with him, evan parker, and chris corsano- the bass playing really blew me away. so, of course, they knew and had a bunch of records he was on...the owner recommended the first in this series of albums called 'meetings with remarkable saxophonists' put together by eddie prevost, a drummer/percussionist who played a lot with the AMM. this series has him playing a drum set (sort of) traditionally rather than doing the AMM kind of thing he's doing in this clip w/ tilbury
I fucking love Downtown Music Gallery. Any time I'm in NYC, I make it a point to visit.

AMM is one of my current obsessions. Not sure if I'd call it jazz or whatever, but I think John Tilbury and Keith Rowe are two of the most talented dudes around. Too bad they semi-split because Rowe and Prevost don't get along anymore, but Rowe's solo stuff is worth checking out. All the new AMM stuff has been Prevost/Tilbury duos, except for Sounding Music, which actually has John Butcher and Christian Wolff on it.

also, I know next to nothing about Michel Pilz, but this solo is great, and I love the sound of a bass clarinet.

Steeb's post reminded me of something. I've never understood why Ellington comes up so much among later/free jazz guys. Sun Ra loved his stuff, and so did Mingus (I know his stuff isn't exactly free jazz), and both of them say Ellington was a big influence on their music. I know I've read other guys say the same thing, Coleman and Dolphy maybe? But when I listen I can't hear it. That's probably because I know jackshit about theory, but I was hoping someone could give me the five minute answer to this question anyway... which probably needs more than five minutes to get answered.

I think they admired his ability as a bandleader more than anything. He was in charge of everything but he allowed all his players to fully express themselves. When you think of Sun Ra or Mingus, you don't really think of them first as individual masters, like you might with Coltrane or Dolphy, you think of them as the catalysts of great, unique groups.

Yes, also he pretty much paved the way for Be Bop to be created by Monk and Coltrane etc. It's like saying Black Sabbath rules because they started metal. They have some rad tunes but none of it is really cutting edge to today's standards. As far as Ellington goes. The videos are goofy but the stuff he is attached to it really cool and some of it has a rad groove. Most of it is heavily influenced by ragtime. He is like the missing link between ragtime and modern jazz.

:?
Don't smirk me. I just wrote a paper on Monk and he has been revered as starting Be-Bop from his time playing as at the Minton in New York. Monk uses Ellington as a major inspiration. I do agree that Ellingtons stuff doesnt have a direct Be Bop style, but Monk morphed his style into his own until he turned into his own jazz gangsta.

just grabbed Coltrane's Interstellar Space, Dolphy's Jitterbug Waltz 2xLP, and Davis's Sketches of Spain for 20 bucks altogether. Also nabbed this Ellington box set for cheap: http://www.discogs.com/Duke-Ellington-T ... se/1853400

triple LP with a nice book full of photos and notes on most of the songs.

yeah, this is outstanding. incredible that he keeps a melodic/harmonic center even when he's dishing out those runs/squeals/honks/etc. and Ali is killer behind the set. lots of energy, but not manic. tight playing, but with a loose feel; if that makes any sense at all.

As far as sax/drum combos go, one of my favorites has always been Andrew Cyrille and Jimmy Lyons. I can't remember if I posted anything by them yet, but here you go anyway:
