ROME [Jerome Reuter] appreciation

Post by Necrometer »

I heard a track from Nera (first full length, 2006) years ago via a mix Quixotic (RIP) made, investigated a bit and was not too impressed, but recently HonkyKong recommended the band again (Masse Mensch Material specifically) and what luck - they're great. I still only like a few songs from Nera, but Masse Mensch is outstanding. That's last of their clearly industrial albums, and things have been a bit softer and more folk on the following three: Flowers from Exile, Nos Chants Perdus, and Die Aesthetik Der Herrschaftsfreiheit (which is a triple-album, loosely "The Aesthetics of Anarchy/Liberation"). The newest one feels sort of bloaty, though I love the other two recent ones.

It is admittedly sort of bullshit to complain about things that test my patience on the recent triple album since he's obviously taking his art very seriously... but this is talking from an entertainment perspective. And I don't think I love sitting down and listening to any of the records start-to-finish. But there are some outstanding songs here, employing that FOLK-POWER to do a lot with little.

Here are some tracks... might be more cheeseball than others' favorites, so feel free to post 'em:

^ ^ ^ the whistles cycling back to the start of the album = :bean:

^ ^ ^ disregard dancers unless you're into that sort of thing

Your post definitely puts this all into context. You were honestly far from anyone who I would ever expect to listen to Rome.

I would check out that NYC show.

I wish I could share the Rome enthusiasm, I really do, after giving them so many chances and hoping to finally catch a ride on that train at the end of the day I just don't think they are my kind of band, and its not an insult towards Rome or should ruin anyone else's enjoyment for the band, its just a personal taste thing, knowe?

Mithy, I am pretty sure anything you love, I would not love - and vice versa. The foundation is far from your heart... the melodic structures are fundamentally POP, and that's true of pretty much all my favorite stuff.
Idget Child wrote:You were honestly far from anyone who I would ever expect to listen to Rome.
Me too, especially considering the elements not covered by my "pop" comment above. I guess that's why I thought they needed more talking about - they really do transcend the dozen genres I've seen applied. It seems their original fanbase also listens to shit like this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fsrVYcEmA_U ... so yeah, some crossover is well-earned by Rome.

Ross I'm glad you dig these guys. I am absolutely in love with them and kind of shocked that they aren't talked about more. This guy's output is insane, as evidenced by the new release. A Cross of Fire I can listen from front to back without getting distracted...although his German spoken word tracks are lengthy they do set a certain mood to the whole thing which I just adore but are admittedly a bit too much at times.

Some favorites...

Never even heard of them until this thread, but I'm totally buying into it. Digging these tracks posted so far. Worthy of further investigation.

ROSS, WHAT IS BEST IN LIFE?!
Rome is good stuff, but the theatricality throws me off sometimes.
I need to hear the last one he put out, but Flowers from Exile still gets regular play from me... what you said about "transcending the genres" they're associated with is spot on... they make integrating styles sound way more natural than it should

Totally agreed, but of course I feel like an asshole. Art-meter v. entertainment-meter. I mean every album is a concept album. I definitely trim the fat on the ipod so I can listen to the actual songs without getting all atmosphere'd at inopportune times. Viva technology I guess?

The latest triad of albums is definitely best handled as THREE things, not one big thing. I think I agree with HK64 that the middle one is best in life. Lots of great songs scattered throughout all three for sure.

I decided to check out this particular track and when I did, my daughter started dancing around. Kinda reminds me of SWANS, which I'm completely cool with.

OK, advanced study reveals that Nos Chants Perdus is my favorite... which makes sense since dude practically mourns the album's over-produced digital falsery [auto- :fp: ]

Umesh I gotta call you out a bit - there may be a lot of bands that sound like this, but which feel like this?

here's some interviews with the Smegmoid motherfucker to promote mancrushes

Oh no...if I were you I'd just go through Old Europa Cafe, Tesco, Cold Meat, etc.
I've listened to some radio shows that cover this stuff - none of it really grabs me the same way. I guess the Masse Mensch Material (and before) stuff is more redundant with the rest of the genre, but I haven't found any music that gives the same feel as the post-MMM stuff.

ok, more info on the next teaser CD:
Infos about the MCD: 'Fester' is a ritual fight with one's own personal demons, a journey not devoid of self-derision. These twilight songs are like a glimpse into a world of otherness. Rome was founded on forward motion ("Bewegung entsteht durch Haltung") and like a true moloch it expels its dead. With 8 critically acclaimed and remarkable (concept) albums in as many years, Rome have built a considerable following in the world's darker musical scenes. Yet, the myth of this Rome is cast in the future tense. This Rome remains vibrant and far removed from the shorthand of conventional imagery, from the distortion of nostalgia the inarticulate contempt for the present and fear of the future.

On 'Fester' this contempt is quite articulate and one can taste the fear that lies at the root of it all. This record brings Rome back to the city, back to the gutter and into the actual world of its author, Jerome Reuter: a world where the sacred and profound, history and eternity, man and god remain completely separated. Musically 'Fester' offers a mixture of what might be termed Murder Folk and Junky Ballads, far removed from the martial drum beats and retrosampling yet more anger-fueled than ever before.

Featuring two tracks from the album 'Hell Money' (in an exclusive alternate version), one exclusive track and a stripped-bare remodeling of the Rome classic 'Le Vertige Du Vide' done 'Fester'-style!

1. Fester (Single Version)
2. Silverstream (Single Version)
3. The Beast Pain
4. Le Vertige Du Vide (JR)

'Fester' is strictly limited to 999 copies!
