You guys are probably up on all the finer points already, but I spent the last couple of days reading this, and it's well worth a look if you're interested in learning about what actually goes into the "bridge," including a running tally of the costs incurred. Lots of questions answered here, including why Scientologists so often come across as automatons, and why they fail to understand that they seem to look like complete fucking lunatics during confrontations. I'm also pleased to find that my $$$ estimates a couple of years ago were right on the money!

One of the most interesting parts of this series, in my opinion, is where the people interviewed relate their experience with OTVIII people in real life vs the hype surrounding OTVIII. Invariably, these people are just as fucking lousy as everyone else, with no apparent special powers whatsoever. Even in the early stages, Scientologists are taught that they are the only people who are effective at communicating, but I think we can all see how that's working for them. In the later stages, where you're supposedly on a higher plane of existence altogether, the results are even more laughably dismal.

It's amazing how childish and petty these idiots can be! The video defaming the people interviewed in the doc even has blurry PI footage straight out of a "shocking beach body" tabloid exposé, and the nicknames and pictures on the sidebar are ridiculous. My favorite is Marc Headley, whose picture has clearly been warped, circus mirror-style. In every instance, the "church" attempts to discredit these individuals based on irrelevant details. For example, they slam Karen de la Carriere ("The Oldest Professional" — I'll admit that's a pretty good turn of phrase) for being both old, as well as for having taken some risque photos at some point. Solid work, guys!

Also, here's some bad news: the guy that I referred to back in 2012 (the father of a friend) has apparently died (and apparently, this happened in 2012, as well). I'm trying to get more info on the situation, but there's nothing online.

and considering how viciously the church goes after people with lawsuits and all the daringly obscene shit they've pulled off in the past(things they did to achieve "church" status in the first place), it's not exactly easy going if you attempt to present all the information and stories to the public in a way that isn't functionally marginal ie. youtube warriors. there hasn't really been anything like this yet for that reason. on this level. and i'm sure theres an unreal amount of blockbuster information they probably had to leave out. apparently the word is that the hbo legal team (over a 100 deep) were working overtime on this just to be sure everything was air tight etc.

but yeah still

my big hope is that it's presented in a way that highlights the universality of the seduction, instead of attempting to distance scientology from any/every other ideology. I'm sure my wish will not be granted, but for me the reason this stuff hits home is because it is just a cartoonishly ramped-up version of so many other belief systems, religious or otherwise. am I a fucking psycho for thinking this? #iconoclasm

yes and no? to me it's so integral to the explosion and popularity of the self help age and it has such an amazing industrial component to it that its like what religion will look like 1000 years from now kinda thing. if there is still religion

there's just more to talk about when it comes to scientology than just making it another smug, high handed attack on belief and faith. like its literally so much more monstrous than that
