having rewatched parts of it because my kids are all star wars shitheads, i've now come around to thinking that the discrete parts of the movie mostly work, except for the prequellian tone of the casino planet—but the editing did it no favors

I walked out of my first two viewings (both opening weekend) thinking there's a 90 minute movie in there that is outstandingToilet Fleet wrote: ↑Sat Apr 07, 2018 11:49 amhaving rewatched parts of it because my kids are all star wars shitheads, i've now come around to thinking that the discrete parts of the movie mostly work, except for the prequellian tone of the casino planet—but the editing did it no favors
but now that I have some more distance, I think the horseshitty parts of the movie make the semi-OK parts seem good in comparison... and that the 90 min (sidequest-free) cut would still be lame. I HATE the "training" and "revelations" we got with luke & rey. each scene felt OK but it added up to a bunch of nothing. the yoda scene was a blast though. kylo is the only thing the movie did right (duh?) and even he lacks the context to make it really work. I'm still waiting on a reasonable explanation about why those red guards would ever start a fight with kylo & rey...

I dunno. It wasn't my favorite part of the movie but I like that it gave a new visual twist on the obligatory cantina-style scene, and introduced some moral grey area into the world-building. I thought it ultimately paid off at the end by hinting that Luke's actions would become an inspirational myth to inspire a new generation of force users. I know people are mad that precocious chillins are in their serious, adult Star war movie but come on, they we're in the movie for like under 2 minutes. And it's not exactly the first time the series has indulged in cute fantastical animal scenes primarily aimed at kids. Eh, it was one of the weaker major plots of the movie for sure but I think people are making too much of it. I can recall many hours worth of star Wars content that is much more reppellent to me personally

I kind of thought that was the point. There was no secret answer for her. She's looking for some "chosen one" destiny and it doesn't exist. I thought it went back to the more Taoist ideas of Empire Strikes Back. She didn't have some grand holy bloodline destiny like Lyle. We saw that plotline already. It would be lame to rehash it IMO. That trope is played out.Necrometer wrote: ↑Sat Apr 07, 2018 4:55 pmI HATE the "training" and "revelations" we got with luke & rey. each scene felt OK but it added up to a bunch of nothing.
Because they killed Snoke? That's their job? It's a Star Wars movies and those have lightsaber fights?Necrometer wrote: ↑Sat Apr 07, 2018 4:55 pmI'm still waiting on a reasonable explanation about why those red guards would ever start a fight with kylo & rey...

but if their boss is dead, then isn't kylo their boss now? it sure as shit isn't hux
and you don't have to explain the SUBVERSION of TLJ to me, that's the only clear throughline of the movie. but they can't do a zero-content training camp and then have her lifting a zillion rocks later. and her lightsaber practice amounted to her flailing it around all alone. it's just dumb.
I thought the "mary sue" accusations after TFA were unreasonable because she pretty clearly had some kid training or inherited organelle density, but TLJ basically proved the haterz to be right - she's just a really special young lady. and now at the end of TLJ she is powerful as fuck and getting powerfuller by the minute, yet has no questions to be answered, and no aspirations. no motivation. thrilling!

Haha sure but then, maybe they're like disgraced Ronin. Fighting to preserve their honor? Who cares. It's pulp space opera. I loved that scene. I don't think any Star Wars movie ever made bears serious scrutiny like that. I have limits, but basically as far as star wars is concerned, those limits are only that it can't be boring and ill-crafted (the prequels)Necrometer wrote: ↑Sat Apr 07, 2018 5:12 pmbut if their boss is dead, then isn't kylo their boss now? it sure as shit isn't hux![]()
I don't think Empire's "training" sequences are qualitatively more convincing or content-rich. At all. One bit. Even if though I like them more because, nostalgia. That's just me.Necrometer wrote: ↑Sat Apr 07, 2018 5:12 pmthey can't do a zero-content training camp and then have her lifting a zillion rocks later. and her lightsaber practice amounted to her flailing it around all alone. it's just dumb.
They're no more ridiculous than Luke Skywalker in New Hope, who is also a Gary Stu by those standards because he gets one under-5min training scene on the millennium falcon (failing miserably) and all the sudden is blasting Stormtroopers and blowing death stars using the force effortlessly.Necrometer wrote: ↑Sat Apr 07, 2018 5:12 pmI thought the "mary sue" accusations after TFA were unreasonable because she pretty clearly had some kid training
Just as Luke Skywalker was a very special young man, only it was because of his uber mystical Skywalker eugenics virgin-birth midi-chlorian blood. Which if you've ever read about the development of the original star wars trilogy or read the original script for Empire, or just wondered why Luke was frenching his sister in New Hope, you will discover it was because the whole trilogy was made up as they went along (except for broad story strokes) and the 'Luke as Vader's offspring' story element was a tacked on gimmick that didn't have anything to do with anything. But hey, it worked then. It did. Wouldn't work now because we've already seen it and it was exactly the type of thing everyone was expecting, which is boring.Necrometer wrote: ↑Sat Apr 07, 2018 5:12 pmshe's just a really special young lady. and now at the end of TLJ she is powerful as fuck and getting powerfuller by the minute, yet has no questions to be answered, and no aspirations. no motivation. thrilling!
Rey's aspiration and motivation is to fight the Empire because it's the right thing to do. That's it. Same as Luke's motivation (at least until Return of the Jedi.) I think if you want any more than that from a star wars movie, you're barking up the wrong tree.
