I hear this complaint all the time about the Praetorians attacking after they kill Snoke -- it's so fucking stupid. There's multiple reasons why they would want to kill people who killed their master that require only the barest efforts of imagination. The simplest, most obvious, and most likely is that they're not merely contractors who punch in and out for their eight hour shift of protecting the most powerful leader in the galaxy, but that they've sworn their lives to protect Snoke and have spent many years in both training and indoctrination to serve (and probably love unconditionally) Snoke specifically, not just whoever the leader of the first order is.MANTIS wrote: ↑Sat Apr 07, 2018 5:40 pmHaha sure but then, maybe they're like disgraced Ronin. Fighting to preserve their honor? Who cares. It's pulp space opera. I loved that scene. I don't think any Star Wars movie ever made bears serious scrutiny like that. I have limits, but basically as far as star wars is concerned, those limits are only that it can't be boring and ill-crafted (the prequels)Necrometer wrote: ↑Sat Apr 07, 2018 5:12 pmbut if their boss is dead, then isn't kylo their boss now? it sure as shit isn't hux![]()

i've not seen anything trailer wise re: solo and i'm glad i haven't, because i want to go into it (whenever i end up watching it) totally brain-nude; i literally just spent a week at disney world and saw a shitload of merch, but zero moving pictures and sounds related to the movie, which has to be some sort of failure of the modern capitalist state
on the disney world note, a.) there's a star wars fireworks show/etc. at hollywood studios which is pretty good, and b.) it struck me that i keep on calling it new order, not first order, which still kinda works in that both were substantially more successful than their predecessors. my two oldest kids went on star tours and lost their goddamn minds; my youngest would get excited whenever he'd see a picture of mickey mouse

I don't expect anyone to read this (I skimmed) but holy hell it seems so wrongheaded in some of its TLJ apologetics - especially claiming that all the main characters have outstandingly realized arcs. aside from us learning more about what luke has been up to, the people are pretty much where they started off. was Finn not on board with the resistance at the end of TFA now?
the movie literally attacks the idea of heroic self-sacrifice
and if the movie's so fucking great, why have you only seen it once, dude?

classic heroism = toxic masculinity now?I was having a conversation with one of my local bartenders I love. We’ve had a lot of lovely, spirited bar arguments. Sports. Movies. You name it. And it’s always been fun and inclusive. But The Last Jedi is the first time I have ever seen him incensed. He kept yelling at us and talking about all the things that were so “stupid” about the film, and then proclaiming that the director “clearly doesn’t understand the tone of Star Wars!” He made this point particularly about the sense of humor in the opening Poe scene. It didn’t matter that I pointed out the tone was no different from Han’s off-the-cuff joke, “everything’s fine here… how are you?” as well as a litany of other moments. He finally just yelled, “I felt like the film was making fun of me!”
And there it was. All these things that I’ve been talking about. The feeling of “being talked down to” by Holdo. The not wanting Finn to be silly. The ignoring of character arcs, the silly tone, the faux logic arguments, it all adds up into the vicarious way people place themselves into a movie. So they felt attacked by this movie…but it’s not attacking them, it’s attacking qualities of people. It’s attacking toxic masculinity. It’s attacking toxic fandom. It’s attacking all the worst parts of ourselves and asking us to do better.

I haven't paid any attention to star wars since the force awakens. I don't really give a rip about any of it. Disney is going to flood the market with the shit and it pretty much means nothing now.
Marvel and DC movies can fuck off too.

I really really really hope the let's-borrow-tonal-elements-from-the-original-trilogy continues such that they crib the pacing and timbre of the final duel in Return of the Jedi. Honestly that's the only part of that movie I genuinely like anymore, so uh, here's to that I guess?
