I just can't picture myself making a "rip ____" post on Facebook for a real life friend's wife, get no response, and then a year later tag the husband In the post about his dead wife.... I think his autistic potatohead is aiming for death metal scene points but it just comes off to me as fucking dumb as hell....

did disalvo react to the initial post? if he did, this could be like a "I still remember, a year later" thing. people commemorate anniversaries of deaths for whatever reason.

I didn't check the likes and if he did, I wouldn't be able to tell if he did it last year or this year. Disalvo making an anniversary post would be legit, some guy hawking his merch on Facebook is not...

weird al was playing very close to work/home, also close to my girlfriend's birthday. she loved him when she was a kid, so we went. it was fine, but holy shit the crowd.

i'm still not sure i can fully fathom the level of social misfire that is the weird al superfan. the guy near us in line was seemingly representative: long stringy dirty-blond hair that terminates in dark tendrils because it's that greasy, wild mustache peppered with white hairs, bad hat, severe glasses, dressed like grunge is still happening, talking about candidate names for his band - including "golden tony" ("it's a reference to anthony daniels, who played C3PO"). some guys in their 20s next to us were sent into hysterics when the projected video for "word crimes" showed a comment on reddit being thoroughly downvoted for containing a typo. these kids are of the meme generation, and somehow it actually registers as funny for them to see a very simple "joke" played out on the social media platform they use. FUCK.

I felt some solace after noticing the non-fans in the audience. we showed up late and grabbed some very nice empty seats in the stadium/amphitheater, and only in retrospect did i realize that this was the season ticket holders' area. this was at the greek theater which is on berkeley's campus, so I'm sure there are plenty of geriatric alumni donor types who buy season tickets because they have nothing else to do with their time or money (berkeley has a fuckload of old people fwiw). anyway, there were some ancient people in attendance, and they just sat completely still, not reacting or moving for the entire show.

Weird Al / They Might Be Giants adult fans are genuinely interesting, very specific people. I don't know exactly what they have in common besides being dorky, but there's something there.

I remember a lingering stereotype from younger years, that people who were really into D&D and Lord of the Rings (social undesirables back then) would be fans of Dr. Demento and Weird Al. I never understood the connection then, but I can't really deny it now.
