I'm really sick of Michael Moore (and a lot of other people on the American left) portraying Norway as some sort of social democratic utopia and basically just being a mouthpiece for Norwegian state department propaganda. The cornerstones of our economy is oil (read for example about Statoil and tar sand projects for some of the heinous shit our State Oil Corporation does) and weapons technology (selling to the US, Saudi Arabia, Israel).

Norway may have some nice prisons, but we are the most zealous war on drugs nation in Europe, with the highest # of heroin addicts and overdoses, and Norway has ongoing trials in international human rights courts for excessive use of solitary confinement. Norway regularly ranks worse all other Scandinavian countries on the Corruption Index, there is rampant nepotism, police misconduct. They never show international journalists the shitty solitary holding cells some prisoners are held in for weeks while awaiting trial.

Housing deregulation (Norway has Europe's most deregulated housing marked - a gift to all real estate sharks) is responsible for growing social inequality, and while we may have free college, if you are enrolled in any school you are not eligible for any other benefits (housing subsidies, welfare, medical benefits) so people take massive loans to cover housing and food if they want an education. Public companies have been gutted and sold off to private interests for decades - Norway has actually sold the postal service to a corporation. Most public transportation companies have been sold and an increasing amount of health care services are outsourced to private corporations. Social dumping and illegal labor is widespread.

What I'm saying is that Norway is weasely little vassal state to the American military industrial complex.
