I can get on board with many of the new sculpts (some Skaven look fantastic) but ooof the fantasy space marines were such a bad idea. so were the steampunk dwarves... and what's up with all the gay contrived names...

I actually own Warhammer Quest Silver Tower, in fact we're almost finished with the campaign. It's pretty dumb, but you can play it while getting shitfaced with friends. It's nowhere near old school WH Quest in terms of levelling etc. Blackstone Fortress is more complex, but still rather simple. The WH40K universe is just such an awesome/ brutal place...

I had a complete boxed OG Warhammer Quest given to me FOR FREE by some dudes at a GW shop. I never fucking played it ONCE. So angry at myself about that.

I played the fucking SHIT out of Hero Quest though. I would probably pay a stupid amount of money for a complete copy of that game. I think I probably still remember everything about how to play it... golden, golden moments.

I've been having this conversation quite a lot recently - best mate and I used to own Hero Quest as kids and played the shit out of it. Looking at it again, it looks hopelessly dated to teh point of being cringey in terms of gameplay mechanics, but I'd still like to play all the base game's missions in one go while getting inebriated. Friend of mine still owns a copy of Space Crusade which we didn't like as kids due to the increased complexity; hope we get to play that one soon.

And oh man EBA, owning WHQ and never playing it is regrettable, to say the least... I mean it's almost as dated as Hero Quest, but still you could do so much stuff between dungeons alone... the Old World is dead and gone though, so there's zero chance of a reissue... always been, realistically, but still... fuck. Have you ever played Advanced Hero Quest, btw?

I had Hero Quest. Only ever actually played it a handful of times.

I never knew this was a thing. I know there are general trends in the way games are designed, but I've never heard of a particular system being described as 'dated' - I don't expect you to explain the entire idea, but how does this work? D20s instead of D6s or something?

I'VE NEVER FUCKING HEARD OF SPACE CRUSADE, HOLY SHIT, THERE WAS A SCI FI HERO QUEST. It's incredible this escaped my attention - I've spent a few evenings over the years reading about HQ, for nostalgia reasons.

Yeah it's a sad fact. I ran with a group of kids who were interested in Warhammer and 40k, but basically only ever painted, assembled and planned our armies - I don't think any of us really understood how to play, and we barely made the attempt. When I got my free WHQ box, kids were starting to smoke weed, case girls, light stuff on fire... I had to keep my nerdy ideation buried, there was no way I was gonna get anyone to play with me. That's basically why I got into modern metal music - got to engage with fantasy stuff by just hiding it in my headphones.

What is The Old World? Is that like a cosmological GW concept, or a company or something?

Never played Advanced Hero Quest, but looking at pictures online I think I might have owned it. Weird that I can't remember.

Have you ever seen this?? Unreleased (but dumped) NES game prototype! Fairly playable!

Nah, I was more talking about stuff like rolling 2D6 for movement instead of having set values or the fact that as a player, I can't do anything but move, attack, search for treasure or traps. HQ almost plays itself, there are almost no meaningful decisions except "Do I attack the Orc first or the Chaos Knight?" If you look at more modern dungeon crawlers, there's tons of shit you can do, like different maneuvers, and there's a lot more strategy or at least tactics involved. Even Silver Tower, which must be the dumbest modern dungeon crawler in existence, gives you more options (usually one melee, ranged, and area attack plus extra options) and gameplay mechanics to play around with. ACtually, scratch that, Mice and Mystics is the dumbest (and most boring) modern dungeon crawlers I know... fuck that game.

I've played HQ on the Amiga, I'd assume that the NES game plays similarly, but I still need to check out the video you posted, I'm tired as hell and on my way to bed.
The Old World is the world in which Warhammer Fantasy, Hero Quest, and the WH Fantasy RPG game used to take place. Before the bastards at GW destroyed it because the market for tin minis was saturated. EVerybody had all the soldiers/ dragons/ lizardmen etc they would ever need.

As for the rest, sorry to hear you couldn't enjoy your hobbies freely when you were a teenager. I was lucky enough to have friends who were huge nerds as well, so we could spend our summers holed up in the cellar painting minis and playing Necromunda and stuff.
