mike, everflowing stream is extremely melodic & hooky. you may also be simpin imho
Not in the same toothless way that latterday Swedish Death Metal was. Dissection, In Flames, At the Gates (not the first few albums), all fucking garbage. Dismember is the best example of a band that actually balanced the melodic stuff with the 80s rawness, but tbqh I always preferred Entombed and Grave anyway.

It's just sad because I really liked that stuff back then and I still do, but these days people have this idea that At the Gates were somehow innovators and Dissection is perceived as... I really don't know what people see in them, but it's obviously more to do with Nödtveidt's pathetic persona than the actual music, which was just all fluffy, la-la, here's another hook. Terrible shit.

I only love a handful of Dissection songs; I am a total sucker for flowery, poppy melodic metal and I don't even think they're consistently nailing it or anything

you need to be a bit more nuanced than just giving them a red card for melody

like i said, its likely all true

he wanted to fuck men his entire life and resorted to criminal behaviors to satisfy that libidinal demand and also he was an adherent of an elitist religion that 3 other guys invented which gave him the spiritual confidence to subsequently do something really cool which is literally killing himself for art, forsaking an endless ocean of vaginalia

hail slaanesh
it is certainly all trve

I'm very much enjoying this jam, as well as the Big Lebowski and Warhammer references in this thread.

Ross, what I'm saying that I think is more nuanced than "melody bad" is the balance between the raw 80s feel and the melodic stuff that I mentioned. It's not that everything that's catchy and melodic is bad (and besides, I liked the last Death album fine, aside from the wonky drumming), but somehow simultaneously sounding like Massacre and Iron Maiden was genius, and Swedish DM eventually lost that. And if you take that away, it's just dumbed down Iron Maiden with growl vocals that sounds like it's meant to appeal to Hot Topic goths.

look I can clear this up

the more abstracted from blues, the worse the metal song

this never fails

you can simplify things just by asking yourself how long after 1976 the song was recorded

the higher the number, the less of your time it is worth

"abstracted from" can mean "derived from"

so I was reading your post like

yeah

fuck yeah

and then... no - no no no no no

you can have this:

or this:

This is not incorrect.

I genuinely don't know if Ross was making a case for or against White Zombie

both those songs are intened to be repugnant in their own ways

but I'll go on record: really early WZ is some of the dumbest and most off-putting shit. the aural equivalent of a head shop...? i feel like they must have had a commercial makeover by the likes of rick rubin or bob rock before sexorcisto

but its also true that WZ rode a very thin margin for error the entire time and every slight misstep made the entire thing collapse into absolute buffoonery

and were they ever good live?

not sure, but I was at an ozzfest where rob zombie (playing at least some white zombie songs!) inspired the lawn audience to throw the entirety of said lawn into the air

I hope we can laugh at that live video I posted without it being misconstrued as some sort of far-reaching WZ takedown

there's footage of them playing more human than human on letterman in 1995 and there's a brief shot of paul moleman playing keys for them

i remember waiting excitedly to get my first look at them playing live for some mtv beach house performance and rob was so out of breath and waving his arms around and running in circles like it would distract from how terrible it sounded but it did not work

i discovered their secret

Few were better self-styled to perform while lounging on a throne than Rob Zombie and he fuckin squandered it
