Not in the same toothless way that latterday Swedish Death Metal was. Dissection, In Flames, At the Gates (not the first few albums), all fucking garbage. Dismember is the best example of a band that actually balanced the melodic stuff with the 80s rawness, but tbqh I always preferred Entombed and Grave anyway.

It's just sad because I really liked that stuff back then and I still do, but these days people have this idea that At the Gates were somehow innovators and Dissection is perceived as... I really don't know what people see in them, but it's obviously more to do with Nödtveidt's pathetic persona than the actual music, which was just all fluffy, la-la, here's another hook. Terrible shit.

I only love a handful of Dissection songs; I am a total sucker for flowery, poppy melodic metal and I don't even think they're consistently nailing it or anything

you need to be a bit more nuanced than just giving them a red card for melody

Ross, what I'm saying that I think is more nuanced than "melody bad" is the balance between the raw 80s feel and the melodic stuff that I mentioned. It's not that everything that's catchy and melodic is bad (and besides, I liked the last Death album fine, aside from the wonky drumming), but somehow simultaneously sounding like Massacre and Iron Maiden was genius, and Swedish DM eventually lost that. And if you take that away, it's just dumbed down Iron Maiden with growl vocals that sounds like it's meant to appeal to Hot Topic goths.

I genuinely don't know if Ross was making a case for or against White Zombie

both those songs are intened to be repugnant in their own ways

but I'll go on record: really early WZ is some of the dumbest and most off-putting shit. the aural equivalent of a head shop...? i feel like they must have had a commercial makeover by the likes of rick rubin or bob rock before sexorcisto

I will go even more on the record: I like every era of White Zombie and I'm mostly not ashamed to say it
