Do you walk around with your ears popped... or not?

How are your ears... usually?

My ears are typically in "loud" mode - not muffled - the way that lets me hear the best

I have no fucking clue how to determine the "polarity" of ear-popping, so I have avoided that in the phrasing of the poll responses. But popping - conversion of eardrum status - is at the heart of the discussion here!

Unless I'm sick or in some weird altitude/pressure situation, I can pop/unpop my ears with ease. I'm usually in "muffled" mode - that's what's natural/comfortable for me - it's the default. I can also de-muffle (via a pop? a de-pop?) if I want to hear something better. I think I am in the minority, and I suspect most people are living life in non-muffled mode, with clear hearing... and my sense is that they'd go crazy if they were muffled by default?

Is muffled mode "popped"? Is it "need to be popped"? Does "popping" refer to any conversion in eardrum status, or is there a polarity to it?

Anyway, I am definitely a loud person, and it's probably because I'm living life half-deaf... but of my own accord?

I think most people don't have to deal with this valsalva adjustment / air equalization. I do! Popped all the time always.

I have eustaceon tube dysfunction, and if I leave my left ear "unpopped" i get some significant distortion in my hearing with loud sounds in the low-mid range (160 Hz). I have to wear earplugs to events with large crowds like a football game or even some symphony concerts.

I have it too in one ear. They gave me flonase. I thought I had a bunch of hearing loss on that side but I got tested by a doctor and it was all good. Just feels like I can't hear I guess. I read about tuboplasty but it sound v unpleasant.

I might need to make another poll, but it's sounding like:
popped = loud mode
unpopped / needs to be popped = muffled?

are people in discomfort when they're in muffled mode? feels fine to have 'em muffled or non-muffled. can go too far in either direction, though, of course.

I'm so susceptible to air pressure changes that my ears get what I guess you call "muffled" even driving home from work, which involves about a 500m change in altitude over the course of something like at least ten minutes. I have to unfuck them by holding my nose and blowing into it, which is always a huge relief. It's ten times worse in planes or on cable cars that climb fast. But it doesn't just, you know, happen.

Never noticed it happening on a bike, but I pretty much never do long descents on the road, and riding trails I'm a lot slower than in the car. It's either that or maybe the breathing affects it.

yeah, I'll defer to kevin, but I feel like exercise & breathing could change yer vasodilation (or whatever controls ear freedom!?!?!) such that it could make the ear pressure updates more spontaneous

y'all know about this thing where you unclog your sinuses by holding your breath and doing a bunch of squats?

I’ve been waking up lately with my left ear clogged and then it will clear itself. I’ll hear white noise/traffic type sound. Ringing in the ears has been getting a lot worse lately even though I rarely listen to music at ear splitting volumes anymore. Can’t really self pop.

Ears going muff happens to me so rarely that I honestly don't understand this entire thread at maximum liberty.

Lately though my left ear has been super itchy, so I've had to swear off poking at it with a q-tip.
I swear off q-tips like once every three years but I can't ever seem to rid myself of the habit.

Mild tinnitus almost every day but it never bothers me like some others, and I think my hearing is still pretty damn sensitive. I can hear electronic equipment when many others say they can't.

basically coul u all suk my dik

Not the ears, but the nose.

Riding bikes gets my nose, not runny, just stuffed up. Clears up after I've stopped for a bit.
Can easily pop ears during plane ride descents, etc.

I've heard about this a bit. No idea what to make of it.

I've never experienced any sense of irritation or an unwell feeling from subtle sounds, though. It's kinda weird that it makes so many people so upset.
