The man is having a moral dilemma about killing the bird so he can take it and feed it to his cat boss. His cat boss has been through this with previous employees and recognizes it happening again, so he's manipulating the man by telling him that humans have earned their place in the food web that allows them to kill whatever animal they want for his food. It's an interesting and clever commentary on how most CEOs fit the profile of sociopaths and will use their "gifts" in the business world to get what they want.
