panels 2 and 3 are not showing the same perspective - you can tell because his head is looking different directions. he never actually turns his head after she starts talking to him - the point is that there's actually nothing more to life than math; he's constructed his dream woman from equations and painted her onto the wall that he's looking at throughout the whole comic

the equations are all trash; pablo picasso doesn't know how to do math at all. he's just impersonating the world-famous professor loring in hopes that the new intern takes the bait. and it works! tragically, picasso has been doing cubist paintings for so long that he's lost touch with reality and can't even enjoy spoils of his ruse. in an interesting twist, spanish universities are super bad at math and the real dr. loring returns to find himself awarded a departmental prize for shoddy work he doesn't recall doing.
