not sure about authorial intent on the placement of the bad news - that's the back of the paper - is the idea that only we see that info? I think it has to be. but I can't help thinking that it wasn't thought about, or the audience wouldn't be trusted to deduce that part.

it reminds me of a skit on sesame street where one muppet has a beverage in a cup and the other is like "can I have half" and the one with the drink says "sure" and then the asker drinks ALL OF IT. "why did you drink it all?" "because my half was on the bottom!" - brilliant troll move you can do when you're 10 and feel like a king of pranks, right? BUT since they're muppets, they had to drink through a straw to facilitate things, which means the bottom half would be consumed first. FILM FLUB!

In the second frame we can clearly see that the boy, in his excitement, has spun so vigorously as to snap his own neck. In the third panel he’s in convulsions while the father and puppy try to rescue him; the irony of course being the boy won’t live long enough to experience the side effects of puppy saliva contact.

It's not a face, his brain is melting. The response bubble originates from the other side of his head suggesting he's so fucked that he thinks the other side of the chair is his own father.

barkelangelo became famous for his ability to paint things "photorealistically" with hyper-fine detail. after landing this major commission, the work he produced was instead in the familiar, classic style of the renaissance masters. many would find this impressive in its own right (considering this is a dog who paints using his tail as a brush), but when you've had to fight the uphill battle of painting OVER the sistine chapel with a modern style (like the trendy pope did), it's a pretty substantial fuckup to end up with basically the same piece of art.
