Full deep thoughts for any masochists in the house tonight:
SPOILERSPOILER_SHOW
Portrait of my soaked self at the coffee shop, on the coffee shop window.

I began with the face, and as I was finishing my eyes, the portrait began to cry... which prompted me to immediately scan myself for sadness. It seemed quite urgent and natural at the time but now seems strange in hindsight.

I have been doing a lot of self-reflection. This has resulted in the last few painting I have done to be self portraits. What might appear to be narcissistic is perhaps only half that. I am simply having a hard time seeing myself, and I am making attempts to recognise who I am.

Do we design ourselves or can we only credit the forces that shape us?

Perhaps the only way we can design ourselves is in how we select the forces that shape us, or in how they have been selected for us.

One lesson I learned from a friend of mine, which I'll never forget, is that we all have thoughts and emotions coming and going. These aren't necessarily "who we are". Who we are is which particular parts of this internal dialogue that we focus on and identify with, giving them power.

That being said, there are other forces at play as well. Nature vs. nurture. Biological predisposition vs. environmental factors shaping us. It's a bit of both, in my opinion, but we also have the choice every day to shift our environment, shift our awareness, and change patterns in our lives.

I like to think we have the power to design ourselves, or at least maybe the portion of our conscious minds that are more readily available. Over time, it will impact the subconscious because of new information coming in, deconstructing old paradigms.

oh please... this is the age of narcissism... these days, as long as you're not posting a new selfie every friggen fifteen minutes, you are ahead (or behind depending on your perspective...) by leaps and bounds!...
using art (which is what i suspect is one of your strongest proficiencies) as a form of self reflection is probably a good way of going about it...

Oh, I was talking about the apparent doctor/med student publicly calling the nurses "bitchy". Great idea.
