In an expensive city like New York, there are always free / cheap options.

Go to freakin China Town and walk around.

Go to any number of museums. MET and Natural History museum are something like $20 or suggested donation, you can spend hours in there and just throw in a dollar or two.
Sony has some tech exhibit in midtown that is free. American Indian museum is free, Goethe is too, most parts.
Almost every single museum, garden, zoo has either a free weekday or a donation day.

Go to Central Park, walk around there for hours. Ride the carousel for 2 bucks.

Spend 2.25 to take the train to Coney Island. The Freak Show will let you in for free if they are having a slow day... unless they are already closed for the season.
