Welcome to last year. I find it odd that Drag City put it out. It's not really their style..

Is there some new big push on them? Maybe 'cuz they have a couple shows coming up soon? Some guy brought them up when I was at the bar the other day, is why I ask...

I don't know, man. You really think that Death record is on the same level as Fun House and Raw Power? It sounds like fairly standard hard rock to me. They're no Crime.

I'm not arguing, the Stooges are miles better all around. I just think that song was faster and heavier and maybe even more straightforward than The Stooges in general. I've dug myself a hole defending this band. It's like finding a missing link between the high energy Detroit rock and then the punk explosion. They seemed to take many of the same influences as the early punk bands, and beating them to it by a few years.

The New York Times says Death formed in the early 70's and switched to "rock" in 73.

Rolling Stone's Bio of the Ramones says they formed in 1974.

The Electric Eels were from 72-75.

That's why I originally said that Death "may have been" the first punk band. Death were in that very brief middle phase right before actual punk.

But all the Stooges records came out before that Death record. I don't think Death beat anybody to anything. Fucking Ted Nugent is more punk rock than Death.
