Re: The Bill's Now Playing Video Game Thread (Now with Bames
all the racing bits in SR2 are optional ... it's not like SR3 where every side mission is mandatory if you want to take over the city. The worst you have to do is a few chase missions. The Bill wrote:Man, really liked Saint's Row 3, a lot. Kind of makes me want to try SR 2, except I think that game has car racing missions you have to play, right? I refuse to play car racing in non-car racing games. GTA and original SR can fuck off with that shit. Rage as well.

i don't think he really bothers anyone at all
just because he isn't "cool" ? he comes to a video game thread to talk about......video games. how tragic.

Yeah, at least there's that.
I went ahead and bought SR 2 cheap off Amazon. I know it's more serious that Saints Row 3, but here's hoping its not like GTA.

it's a little campier than San Andreas ... the main story is mostly dark humor, and then the rest of the world and the side missions get a bit sillier (spraying sewage on people, protecting celebrities by beating up overzealous fans). The Bill wrote:Yeah, at least there's that.

did you get 360/PS3? The PC port has ... issues.

360 version. THQ doesn't have a very good PC track record.triple clutcher v2.5b wrote:it's a little campier than San Andreas ... the main story is mostly dark humor, and then the rest of the world and the side missions get a bit sillier (spraying sewage on people, protecting celebrities by beating up overzealous fans). The Bill wrote:Yeah, at least there's that.

Moving on... Any of you dickheads getting Persona 4 Arena on Tuesday?
It already has broken sales records of any current generation fighting game in Japan. Hopefully that translates to US players getting into it. Arc Sys is the shit.

I've been considering getting a PS2 and modding it. There are so many awesome PS2 games I missed out on, The last 3/4ths of the PS2 era I had stopped playing video games all together. I'm actually getting pretty excited at the prospect of doing this. Anyone know what's the best technique for modding ps2's? Soft mod or hard mod? discs or external hard drive? I don't know shit about this.

I softmodded mine a few months ago and it's one of the best baming choices I've ever made. You need to pick up a few things to get it done, but it's not terribly taxing and it's certainly not expensive.Friendly Goatus wrote:I've been considering getting a PS2 and modding it. SPOILERSPOILER_SHOW
You will need:
- A real copy of an exploitable game (I used 007: Nightfire)
- A ps2 memory card
- A USB storage device that is compatible (this can be touch and go, most people use a flash drive, but none of mine worked - wound up using a chinese MP3 player and I was good to go)
- A program called Free McBoot
Your only real objective is to get Free McBoot onto a memory card. This is software that will allow your PS2 to play burned games without any hardware modifications. The stuff I've listed here is for a disc-swap technique - I found this preferable to any of the other installation methods, but maybe you'll find something else more to your liking. The website that hosts Free McBoot has pretty good tutorials for any case.
Here's the link to the swap guide - but they have everything else available, as well. Poke around a bit. PM me if you want help.
http://freemcboot.info/swap.html
Also worth noting - to play burned games, you will need to patch each ISO before you burn it. This is painless and instant, all you need is a program called ESR Disc Patcher.

To put it mildly. I bought SR2 for 360 after owning it on pc because the pc version was so goddamn wonkyThe Bill wrote: 360 version. THQ doesn't have a very good PC track record.

I never played a persona game, but it looks so good.
I wish capcom would ditch the stupid 3d graphics style and use sprites like this or kof13 did. It looks so much better. But they won't ever do that because it takes time.

It's not even just my unwavering loyalty to anything that reminds me of 1999 - I genuinely don't like the look of the 3D games. They're fantastic, well-made titles compromised by an ugly visual element.
This past generation of games has had a strange convention of edging every object with a strange sort of glowy aura. It's like a peculiar source of colored light is hitting all the characters from almost every angle. With MVC 3, Street Fighter 4, and Tatsunoko vs Capcom they've embraced this full force - except in this case it's a fucking dark shading, like every character's muscles are somehow partially enveloped in a shadow that follows them everyone they move onscreen. It just looks fucking ugly to me, which is a shame because I think that the sprite-based fighting games had a wonderful and distinct look that relied very heavily on GREAT color. Bleh.

of course, we've reached the point where we can have hand-drawn art in games with zero loss in quality and now nobody wants to make those games

Totally would have to try this first hand before I even ponder a purchase. No way around it. I also wonder about non first person POV when using it.Wang Mandu wrote:http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/152 ... y_launched
Would buy this before the next Xbox.
