When you guys start up Dishonored, turn off all the objective markers. Makes the game that much better.

Less than an hour in but so far it's great. It controls so well and everything feels really smooth. As for the objective markers, it's a game that's meant to be explored and if you've got something always telling you where to go, you'll miss out on discovering things on your own. Lots of loot and notes that add life to the world are tucked away and later power upgrades. You can tell they put a ton of effort towards crafting every piece of the game world.
Here's an excellent article about the game:

Only nitpick is they really should have used some English accents in the game instead of American ones. The setting is perfect for English accents.

Definitely waiting for used price drop for Dishonoured. I have a bunch of games still haven't played through at all, a couple I'm in progress on, and I'm pretty first-person'd out regardless. Just feeling like it can wait.

Indeed. Blink rules and really opens up a lot of approaches and gameplay options.

there was definitely a lot more I was interested in, but realistically, it will take me a long time just to get through GK2 and a couple PQ games.right over there wrote:that sale was insane - i probably spent close to a thousand dollars on all those games back in the 90s...caldwell.the.great wrote:downloaded Police Quest 1-4 and Gabriel Knight 2 from GOG for less than $7.00 can't decide which to play first.
gk2 is pretty good if you don't compare it to the first one. the chapters you play as grace are really boring, and most of the acting is cringe-worthy.
police quest 4 is cool - start with that, it has some good twists and turns.
I loved the first Gabriel Knight game. All time favorite adventure game alongside stuff like Day of the Tentacle, Sam & Max, Loom... I'm willing to forgive bad acting and some boring stretches for a great story and cool historical info, like what she stuffed into Sins of the Fathers.
PQ1 is the VGA version, which is a bonus. Do I need to start with the first one to get through the other games, or can I just jump into 4?

I'm definitely in a gaming slump right now. Probably wont seriously play anything for the next 2 years. At least I know there will be some good games to visit when I come back around.

what's wrong man? do you need to talk about it? let's get through this together
i've been in a slump too, but that always happens over the summer/early fall for me. i'm pretty sure the dark souls DLC will pull me out of it in a big way. might just start a whole new character for exploring new areas/PVP arena purposes.
i'd like to read more thoughts on dishonored though. i'm tempted to pick it up but i have a bad feeling it's going to be a steampunk DE:HR (as far as "here is the killing path, here is the stealth path"-based gameplay goes).

I know that feeling. I really shouldn't even be buying new games with my massive backlog but I have no willpower.
Dishonored might scratch that itch, Goatus.

This game is waaaay more open than DE:HR. Granted, I'm only a little ways into the first mission but the level design is vastly superior. With the teleport ability, you're faster than sadfuck Jensen and can scale heights much easier. Ladders and vents? And supposedly the non-lethal way of taking out targets is more than pump them full of tranq darts like DE:HR. You don't get xp for going one way or the other (like how much better it was to stealth in DE than kill), you unlock abilities by finding runes distributed throughout the world or doing sidequests.Spooky Apparition wrote:i'd like to read more thoughts on dishonored though. i'm tempted to pick it up but i have a bad feeling it's going to be a steampunk DE:HR (as far as "here is the killing path, here is the stealth path"-based gameplay goes).

Re: The Bill's Now Playing Video Game Thread (Now with Bames
it's basically Deus Ex: Skyrim
you have magic in your left hand and a sword in your right. You go around stealthily killing people until it doesn't work and your wildly hit the trigger swinging your sword praying that you hit something without being able to clearly see anything at all. Every time you do some magic shit you say a stupid annoying catch phrase and in your down time you pick up books you don't read and throw severed heads at the ceiling or place them on toilets.
It's a cool setting and the art looks like Ratatouille as a killing machine and most of the killing animations are pretty sweet but so far the story is boring and the pacing is just as bad, hopefully it picks up

Dishonored is also like jet moto in that both games are on a disk that you put into a console.

Re: The Bill's Now Playing Video Game Thread (Now with Bames
i think starting with the first one will give you quite an appreciation for how much the games improved over time, but story wise it doesn't really matter. i think iv is about twice as good as the rest in terms of being an "adventure"...caldwell.the.great wrote:there was definitely a lot more I was interested in, but realistically, it will take me a long time just to get through GK2 and a couple PQ games.

and gk2 has a ton of history in it - you go on a guided tour of ludwig ii's castle, among other stuff.
