Re: NBA THREAD: Toilet Fleet Jr 2013!!
Lets take a moment to remember Kobe Bryant's 4 game 50-point streak, 2 of which were 60 point games. Take into context that before this streak the Lakers had lost 7 games in a row and their record stood barely above .500 at 33-32. Fan were wondering if the Lakers would make the playoffs and overall perception by the fans and the league was that they were going down a very slipper slope. Then this happened:
3/16 vs Blazers - WIN - 65pts One of Kobe's greatest games ever. 3 consecutive 3s in the last 2 minutes to bring the Lakers back from down 7 and send the game into over time. Then in OT an insane corner 3 in which he was trapped by 2 defenders, but somehow got a fading 3 off. Literally one of his greatest shots ever.
3/18 vs Timberwolves - WIN - 50pts Said Kevin Garnett: "They were a lot more active on the boards tonight and Kobe got into a flow really fast. We should have trapped him earlier." Sorry was not going to happen. There was an obvious change coming over the team, as the defense was starting to give up less points and effort all around seemed to be much higher.
3/22 at Grizzlies - WIN - 60pts Quote on Kobe's mentality: “At one point, we got the offensive rebound and a whole new 24-second left. Lamar gave the ball right back to him and Kobe went right back at them. He just smells blood in the water and he’s going to go after you.” — Phil Jackson
With this game, he became only one of 4 players with 3 50-point games in a row. Included in the list are Wilt Chamberlain, Elgin Baylor and Michael Jordan.
3/23 at NO Hornets - WIN - 50pts The end of the streak; with this game only Wilt had more consecutive 50-point games (7 games!). Included an awesome shot in the 3rd quarter in which Kobe told a boy in the courtside seat he was going to make a shot for him, and followed by draining his next 3-pointer. Said Kobe on his accomplishment: "It's a tremendous honor for me to be in the same (category) with those guys. The coolest thing about it is this younger generation gets a chance to learn about Elgin Baylor, gets a chance to learn about Wilt Chamberlain and some of the things that they've accomplished, so that the legacy will continue to live on."
The streak ended at 4 games, but Kobe came very close in the next game against the Warriors, as he ended with 43 points and a win.
With this streak, Kobe literally rejuvenated a slipping season and the Lakers improved to a 38-32 record. I don't know how a player cannot win the MVP award for that... The Lakers as a team were not that exciting at the time and were without a doubt mediocre, but Kobe singlehandedly kept them in the spotlight. I remember everyone (fan and non-fans of the Lakers) would watch Laker games just to see what he would do that night. The forums were buzzing about Laker talk just because of him. I don't know any other player other than Jordan who commanded so much attention night-in/night-out that they would go out of their way to watch the game, other than Kobe during that time period.
Lets take some time to remember one of the most prolific scorers in NBA history and this small sample of his dominating prime.

Re: NBA THREAD: Toilet Fleet Jr 2013!!
Tried listening to Bill Simmons' 30 minute podcast with DeMarcus Cousins. What a complete fucking idiot Cousins is, jeezus. He's a great player but it's no wonder some of these monkeys can't figure out how to play the game the right way. HE might be doing that but his team is so bad insuch a bad conference it's hard to tell. It's really a shame he has to stay there because it might ruin his whole career, even if he leaves with some good years left in him.

Re: NBA THREAD: Toilet Fleet Jr 2013!!
I remember this happening in January but did you guys know about it? Talk about the best deal ever, anywhere:
Forbes wrote:The NBA Finally Puts An End To The Greatest Sports Deal Of All Time
The New York Times is reporting that the National Basketball Association has finally reached an agreement with Ozzie and Daniel Silna, two brothers who owned the Spirits of St. Louis, a former American Basketball Association franchise through which they had negotiated what became known as “the greatest sports deal of all time.” With help from their lawyer, Donald Schupak, the Silnas had, since 1976, received a portion of the NBA’s television rights fees which added up to an estimated $300 million. The NBA has long wanted to somehow end the Silnas sweet deal. And it looks like, with an upfront payment of a cool $500 million or so, the NBA will finally get its wish.
The reason the NBA is acting on this now? The league’s media rights deals expire after the 2015-16 season, and it does not want any of that money–expected to be the NBA’s biggest payday yet–going the Silnas way.
I wrote about the Silnas amazing story back in May 2011. The short version: The Silna brothers were, at the time, the owners of the St. Louis Spirits of the ABA when the NBA decided to absorb the rival league. During the merger, the NBA agreed to take on four of the ABA teams–the New York (then New Jersey and now Brooklyn) Nets, San Antonio Spurs, Indiana Pacers and Denver Nuggets.
That left three ABA teams out of the mix. When the Virginia Squires folded, the ABA and NBA had just two teams left to deal with: The Kentucky Colonels and the Spirits. The ABA offered the franchises $3 million each to fold. John Y. Brown, owner of the Colonels, took the deal. (Then the president and majority owner of Kentucky Fried Chicken, Brown would go on to become the governor of Kentucky.) The Silnas and Schupak turned that offer down.
Instead, they negotiated their own deal. ABA officials, wanting to tidy up the merger, agreed to the following: the Silnas would be paid for any Spirits players drafted by NBA teams, an amount that came to roughly $2.2 million. On top of that, the Silnas would also get a 1/7th share of each of the four former ABA teams’ NBA “visual media” rights (which amounted to 57% of one full share).
Here’s the kicker: By the parameters of the deal, they would receive that share of the NBA’s television revenue in perpetuity which worked out to roughly $300 million, quite a deal for two owners of a team that hasn’t existed for nearly four decades.
As I reported in my 2011 story, some of the Silnas money was lost in the Bernard Madoff Ponzi scheme.
The New York Times reports that the agreement with the NBA came because of Daniel Silna’s growing reluctance to keep fighting the league. With an estimated $800 million haul from the deal, Daniel (69) and Ozzie (80) Silna will always be part of basketball lore, for striking the deal that will go down as the best ever in sports business history.

Re: NBA THREAD: Toilet Fleet Jr 2013!!
I guess it's kind of funny since it spoofs Lebron's article *shrug* But I'm kinda over how all the die hards love this guy
Before anyone cared where I would play basketball, I was a kid raised in Enumclaw, Washington. It’s where I walked. It’s where I ran. It’s where I did a paper route at age six. It’s always held a special place in my heart. From the moment I signed with the Celtics, I knew this was my new home. Most of the people are just like me. They work hard, they play hard, and the passion they have for their sports team is unlike anywhere in the world. I had passion for my team just like the fans. I guess I was kind of like the fans except I had a courtside seat for free and if we were up by 20 with less than two minutes to play I would get to go into the game. Where was I – the great American city of Boston. In Boston, people's passion can be overwhelming. But it drove me. The Celtics hadn’t won a championship since the Larry Bird era of the 80s, so I wanted to give them hope when I could. I wanted to inspire them when I could. My relationship with Boston became bigger than basketball. I didn’t realize that when I left Boston in free agency four years ago. I do now.
