The genesis sonic games are great. I never followed any if the later platform game and hear they are all terrible. Streets of rage was decent but the two sequels were vastly improved. I always liked golden axe though it lacks luster today, the magic attacks still have their charm.

That was a good article, I can definitely relate to a bit of that.

My experience with the internet (and online communities) as shelter from a harsh adolescence was quite similar. I never actually withdrew from the real world, I had qualities that I could use to validate myself both irl and online (here) - but there were definitely some teetering years looking back on it where I could have slipped into total that-guy.

I guess to me the internet has always been that weird basement in the movie 8MM where Nick Cage walks around and boggles at the fucked up crazy zoophiles and smut peddlers he's mingling with. I remember that exact scene coming to mind the first few months I discovered 4chan, and began posting on the original RBB in earnest (10 years ago this month...!).

It was easier for me because being an internet person was still extremely weird and socially frowned-upon back then. I felt an instinctive, shame-based drive not to become one of the NEET crazies even if I spent a lot of time in their world. It is probably much more difficult for the more current half of the millennial generation to avoid sliding into this shit because there is no longer any division between civil society and online community.

It was also always blindingly obvious to me that the misogyny, racism, and general antisocial ethic that breeds in those places came as a reaction to feelings of social rejection. I could relate to those feelings, but it seemed like actually joining in with the herd would be 'giving up'.

What any of this has to do with libertarian economics still confuses me a bit, but I gave up on trying to figure out why people settle on rigid political identities when I was like 17...

In multiplayer first-person shooters like Halo 3, teams cooperate to kill members of the opposing team outside of a dedicated storyline such as that seen in a single player campaign within the game. As a result, the multiplayer games can be argued to be direct competitions outside of any sexualized storyline or content as they are only associated with the goal of eliminating opponents. Killing opponents results in a positive outcome for the team, while dying results in a negative outcome. In addition, improved performance within a game allows players to attain higher ranks and improve their skill rating, a long-term measurement of player status (i.e. dominance) that is publicly exhibited. We examine how individuals behave toward a male or female-voiced teammate as a function of positive (number of kills) and negative (number of deaths) player performance, as well as player status (maximum skill achieved).

A secondary benefit of using Halo 3 is that players are covered head-to-toe with armor and identified by armor color, rather than facial features or body type. Additionally, player controlled avatars are not the hypersexualized males normally seen in many other video games, hopefully decreasing the overt sexism seen in most online competitive games and minimizing the effect of the game environment.
