That's ridiculous - has anybody really played through any of those huge-ass maps?!

Re: Suffering from an urge to play Dungeons & Dragons
So how do you play those huge maps - do you print them out and present them room by room or do you draw them on a transparent layer or...? Is this more or less a huge hack'n slay session or does it involve "real" role-playing as well (meeting and accepting a quest from a stranger in a tavern, falling in love with the Ice Queen etc.)?

Re: Suffering from an urge to play Dungeons & Dragons
all depends on your style of play. a lot of people are playing through virtual tabletops like roll20 completely through the internet now which has a variety of ways to play that might blow your mind. other people are obviously sitting around a table and drawing their own maps or, like you said, presenting them room by room by uncovering them with paper or using projectors etc. depending on the type of game your players want to play or what the group consensus is you have a dungeon crawl that's just people arguing over how to proceed with tons of lite roleplay and decision making with very little combat or, you can just be fighting shit with no attempt at story or character interaction. are you trolling meTHE KILL wrote: ↑Wed Feb 21, 2018 7:13 am So how do you play those huge maps - do you print them out and present them room by room or do you draw them on a transparent layer or...? Not trolling, merely curious as to how you and your group play them, so thanks for the explanation. I've gotten the impression that RPG culture in Europe is a bit different from American RPG culture (I've only found out a couple of years ago that you refer to RPGing as tabletop gaming, a term which exclusively refers to miniature wargaming in Europe) - much of US gaming seems to involve Hero Quest like elements (boards, minis) while most of European RPGin involves no more than people sitting around a table and merely talking about what is going on and throwing dice once in a while.

Re: Suffering from an urge to play Dungeons & Dragons
TL:DR version: recommend me tabletop dungeon crawlers
Mantiste extended cut: (Not sure if this is the right place for this question but it didn't really seem solo thread worthy. However, if I'm clogging up your D&D thread with board-game poseury, I'll be happy to move my post to an adjacent thread-tile.) I've never played D&D or any true analog RPG's. Closest I ever got was a young love affair with Hero Quest. Some pals and I are talking about putting together a tabletop night and I'm looking to rekindle that romance with dungeon crawlers w/ lite RPG elements. I'm more into story and fun than tactics and complexity for now. And I'm more interested in co-op play against the game itself than a 1 vs many style where one player has to be the DM or Overlord or whatever (though that's not necessarily a deal breaker.) If they weren't long out of print and way overpriced, I'd probably just spring for Hero Quest or Warhammer Quest, which I hear was HQ inspired to a degree (though I have no real interest in the Warhammer universe.) Any recommendations for me dice-nerds?
Here's some that have caught my eye so far in my research:
-Mansions of Madness (I dig the Lovecraftian theme, and the role of DM can apparently be delegated to an app)
-Zombicide: Black Plague (theme doesn't do much for me but I hear it's a fairly simple, streamlined co-op experience with no DM needed)
-Star Saga (seems similarly light and fun but with a sci-fi theme that interests me more. I believe the DM role [aliens] can be delegated to an in-game AI but maybe only in solo play? Also I confess the tiny space-furniture scratches my Hero Quest itch a tad)
-Space Cadets: Away Missions (60s star trek parody style sci-fi story doesn't interest me as much but it seems people have nothing but good to say about this game. May be a bit tactical for my tastes? But no need for a DM if I understand correctly)
-Shadows of Brimstone (perhaps a bit unwieldy for me right now but theme and game itself do seem fun as hell. Co-op play and no DM needed but I'll admit that having to assemble the miniatures is a huge drawback for me)
-D&D Adventure games (Castle Ravenloft, Legend of Drizzt, Temple of Elemental Evil, and Wrath of Ashardalon) (these are said to be fun and simple games more for a quick play over beers than any kind of deep campaign, and they are all somewhat interchangeable and/or combinable from what I've read. But they also seem like they may be too simple for much replayability)
Info and opinions appreciated menz

Re: Suffering from an urge to play Dungeons & Dragons
mansions of madness v2 with the app GM rules, but not a ton of replay-ability without buying expansions so it can be spendy overall. its a ton of fun though, but can be pretty fucking hard. I own both so if anyone is ever in michigan and wants to play...

Re: Suffering from an urge to play Dungeons & Dragons
Thanks for the good info dude. If I ever find myself up that way I'll holla at a balla
Does MoM v2 have any timed aspect? I read good things about Descent v2 but the "racing" aspect turns me off a bit

Re: Suffering from an urge to play Dungeons & Dragons
Gloomhaven looks extremely interesting but possibly on the complex mechanics side for me. Lots of math and calculations, and very focused on combat tactics more than loot and exploration it seems. But hey, up to like a hundred hours of unique campaign play with legacy elements to spice things up? Pretty intriguing. Gonna leave it on my radar while I play in the kiddie pool for a bit.
Also, no dice? No dice. I like dumb random dice roll stuff

Re: Suffering from an urge to play Dungeons & Dragons
What about Folklore: The Affliction? Any of you cats ever play that one? It was recommended to me and seems to be an interesting crossbreed of dungeon crawler and traditional RPG. It's out of print but there's a 2nd ed coming apparently. Co-op play, no DM needed, my only reservation is that it supposedly plays much better with 4 players minimum and I doubt I'll regularly have more than 3
