agreed. looks totally bland, somewhere between a slightly more serious-minded version of that recent Power Rangers movie and one of those DTV Starship Troopers sequels.

If you can just light speed your ship into another ship, what was the point of all those death star episodes?

I just re-watched the first one last week, and, uh, isn't that kinda what Pacific Rim is? What did you expect?

Anyway, I want to see the sequel, but it seems to be tanking around here. All the theaters have already moved it to the smaller screens.

first one has a much richer production design and a more interesting mythology than that, but ok.

Aliens are teleporting giant monsters through a crack on the ocean floor. Humans build giant robots. Robots punch monsters. Stuff splodes.

I did like the production design for its flagrant "fuck it, as long as it looks cool" approach.

Hahaha.

I'm sorry, dude, I just don't see anything in Pacific Rim that isn't a thinly-veiled excuse for cool visuals. It's been barely a week since the last time I watched it and I'm already having a hard time remembering anything about the plot again.

I’m so glad the Pacific Rim backlash has finally arrived.

How the fuck do you leave out the best part of a “monsters rampaging unchecked through cities” movie; that being monsters rampaging unchecked through cities. Don’t get me wrong here, mechs battling giant monsters is cool as fuck, but they relegated the monsters appearing and destroying cities to a weird pre-montage during the intro. Left a bad taste right from the start.

For the record, I like the first movie fine for what it is. And it's a dumb, but really pretty movie about giant robots punching giant monsters. I also thought it pretty much reveled in how stupid it was and had no pretensions of anything else, which made me like it more, if anything.

So if this second movie has less intricately designed visuals and fewer gratuitous scenes of carnage and destruction, yeah... not a whole lot left to love then.

pacific rim is great and the sequel sucks - there's no backlash here

the hong kong fight in the first one ticks that box of yours, riley

the first one is an anime come to life, like matrix or speed racer - it's fine if that's not your thing, but these are good examples of that (matrix has crossover appeal since it has a thoughtful plot)

aside from the solid visual storytelling, absence of crassness, and strong/clear character motivations (all are absent in power ranger adaptations or transformers sequels), it's got this going for it (reposted from elsewhere obviously):
I've been reading this book called Existential Psychotherapy, and it focuses on four key fears that are distinct to the human experience and must be overcome for a person to have a peaceful life. They are: the fear of death, the fear of squandering one's freedom, the fear of isolation (i.e. the inability to connect fully with any other human), and the fear of a meaninglessnes universe. Pacific Rim addresses each of these in exciting ways. The fear of death is often overcome by a simulated sense of immortality gained through personal achievement: a jager pilot definitely gets to tap into this sense of fulfillment. The fear of squandering freedom is overcome by Raleigh when he makes the decision to return to piloting, instead of wasting his life in futility working on the wall. Mako also gets to relish empowerment by exercising her will (an embodiment of freedom) in becoming the pilot she wants to be. The fear of psychological isolation is dealt with in a literal and compelling manner when two pilots get to fuse their minds in the drift. And the fear of meaningless is ameliorated when the entire population of the earth is threatened by a menacing force: what could be more meaningful than pushing back against this threat?

Look at this cool dude who never learned the definition of “unchecked” so he just pretends it doesn’t exist and isn’t the lynchpin word in my criticism

Speaking of, Rampage looks like it might scratch my unquenchable itch for cities on flame with rock and roll
