Well it was in line with most of the older Godzilla movies... am I the only person on this board that enjoyed it? Could have used more monster fights, though, I can straight up admit that, but some of the fights were spectacular if I remember correctlyEight Bit Alien wrote: ↑Mon Dec 10, 2018 11:16 pmMan that was a powerful bait-and-switch. I think Breaking Bad had just recently ended?Necrometer wrote: ↑Mon Dec 10, 2018 9:56 pm remember that fucking incredible teaser for recent nu-godzilla, and then the movie was just ehhhh
Cranston's super-powerful emotional rage speech really made it seem like they were treating it seriously, maximum excitement - then the movie itself was so sullen and slow.

it was ok
even the movie itself was a bait & switch - the first act teases actual interesting human stuff and then the rest is cardboard human assholes that we have no chance of caring about
but yeah it did the monster stuff pretty well

i liked it a lot. not that i don't enjoy the more kid friendly wrestling match Kaiju films, but i appreciated that it wasn't afraid to be mournful and hellish.

Re: Latest movie you watched (1-10 scale)
It's been awhile so I'll just dump what I can remember seeing since the last time I was here.
Halloween (2018) - 3 - Hollow fanboy trash.
The House That Jack Built - 7
Fun but a bit tiresome by the end. Some great death, though.
Suspiria (2018) - 6.5
Saw it on Halloween night. Liked it more than I thought but still needs a good trimming and it's a bit more drab and arthouse for my personal taste. Some solid moments too. Would've gotten a 7 if it wasn't for director reminding me that I can't like things anymore by using CGI gore near the end.
Mandy - 4
Nicholas Wending Refn for kids who just discovered their dad's Motorhead and Judas Priest CD's.
The Nun - 3
Got high as fuck and saw it in a crowded theater and you'd think the audience was watching The Exorcist. A lot of shots directly ripped from Fulci which made me smile.
Dial Code Santa Claus - 8
It's a kid's movie made for weird grown ups? Obscure French flick from 89/90 that's been rediscovered and doing a minor tour across the states. Home Alone vs. Silent Night Deadly Night. I'd post the trailer but it's best to see it blind like I did.

Mortal Engines - 8/10 on the overblown blockbuster scale.
Visually about as awesome as you'd expect, and with a competently put together story, unlike most of these kinds of movies. As it turns out, the LotR crew still knows how to write a script if they have to keep it within two hours. Too bad nobody wanted to see it.

Re: Latest movie you watched (1-10 scale)
bad times at the el royale 7.5/10? this is really hard to grade. if I were 17 it'd probably blow my mind, but it's also so transparently derivative of other movies/directors that it's hard to get excited about. it did manage to make me feel an emotion or two so it's at least that good
the predator 3/10 very few redeeming qualities - I liked the empty calorie carnage of the third act but holy shit what a waste! as I related to a dear friend, you know you're in for a bad time when olivia munn is a main character and her acting hasn't even made it onto your list of complaints.

I wanted to see it, but not urgently. you may have pushed me into "catch it in a 3D theater" territory... assuming it's not already too late

It's already been moved to the broom closet screens here, so good luck with that... it's definitely worth seeing in a big 3D theater if you still can, though.Necrometer wrote: ↑Sun Dec 23, 2018 9:09 pmI wanted to see it, but not urgently. you may have pushed me into "catch it in a 3D theater" territory... assuming it's not already too late

Spiderverse - 6.5/10
Heard too many people say how great it was before seeing it I think. Visually it was very engrossing and interesting, especially in 3d, but people talking about this like it’s the 2nd coming of Akira or something need to get it together. Good, not great.
Annihilation - 8/10
It brought to mind a more processed, focus-group’d Stalker. That last sequence in the lighthouse was something special and the movie probably would have been a 6.5 or 7 without it.

That movie must have been my disappointment of the year. What a fucking snoozefest.

My favourite movies are all snoozefests
Not that this was anything close to a favourite movie, but that’s not a descriptor I would ever really use as a negative
