Holy lord this blasphemous bullshit about Swayze roadhouse-- ok, you got me on your trolling. Good work. Anyway that's all I'll say about that
Mid 90s - 8.5/10. Absolutely hate the throwback 4:3 aspect bullshit but this was good. Also was weird to see all the now defunct skate clothes I totally forgot about and that definitely brought me back to that time but still movies were still filmed in 16:9 YOU FUCKING DICKHEAD JONAH HILL

Huh? They don’t talk so how is it… Does Godzilla have a mix tape? Does Godzilla do a combat dance battle to Blue Oyster Cult?Whee of the Dead wrote: ↑Fri Mar 29, 2024 6:11 am Godzilla x Kong - 3 - Guardians of the Galaxy ass bullshit

Spaceman - 8/10. I could see why people would hate this and to be honest I kind of do too but it was engaging enough and very pretty

Dude! If you kind of hate it than there’s no way I believe in your 8 out of 10. 8 out of tens are Star Trek IV or Seven. No hate there.ghost boner wrote: ↑Fri Mar 29, 2024 7:37 pm Spaceman - 8/10. I've realized I take no pleasure in another man's discomfort (unless it's that EBA dumbass). I'm going to watch Roadhouse, in full, with an open mind, and I'm fully prepared to admit publically in case I was wrong.ghost boner wrote: ↑Thu Mar 28, 2024 3:52 pm Holy lord this blasphemous bullshit about Swayze roadhouse-- ok, you got me on your trolling. The Zone of Interest
One of the darkest films I have ever seen. Highly recommended.

Sanjuro - 9/10 funny with lots of entertaining action. Able to watch this thanks to Valgalder's excellent movie collection.

Simon King of the Witches ('71 | 99min) - 6.5/10 - Feels like watching a very dark episode of the Monkees where Michael Nesmith goes witch-mode and moves into a storm drain. Don't test Simon, lest you get cursed by floating red orbs.

Super unexpected based on the lack of blood in the rest of the film!

LOTR: Fellowship of the Ring - Expanded Edition - 8/10. I appreciated some of the additional stuff about the Hobbits but I really felt the length and thought the pacing of the theatrical version was pretty much perfect. I don't think I'll be able to handle the expanded Two Towers or ROTK.

The Fly - 9/10
For some reason I had never seen this despite the fact that I certainly do love me some Cronenberg and there are other movies of his that I've watched like a dozen times, like Naked Lunch, which I had this obsession with in my late teens that I really can't explain.
Anyway, everyone but me already knows that The Fly is absolute peak Cronenberg body horror, so I'll just point out that watching this for the first time in my life almost 40 years after it originally came out, I'm really just dumbfounded by how good the effects are. it's fucking disgusting, and it holds up 100%.
One point docked for the plot being just a wee tiny bit too straightforward because it really isn't much more than library of Cronenberg's favorite tropes that just kind of marches towards its inevitable conclusion. But it's still a great movie.

Poor Thing 6/10
Mostly pretty, but all of the outside shots look like a 3 year old PC game.
Plot wise it's just lady Fight Club if it was written by an alternate universe Tarantino where he was trans; not literally fight club, but is going to occupy the same cultural place for women over the next quarter century that fight club occupied for sad lonely men over the last quarter century.
Visually it's Moulin Rouge meets The Imaginarium of Dr. Parnassus, but uses the black and white to color metaphor from Wizard of Oz to make the implication that life doesn't exist for women until their first orgasm.
Subtext is insufferably ashamed rich-girl politics

You know the music tried really, really hard to make an impression.
My impression was that the composer thought they invented the concept of a global glissando and we're gonna ride that gimmick into the ground. In a movie where everything and everyone was chewing the scenery, the score had the biggest teeth.
I mean I had a pretty good time, it just all felt like a billionaire heiress' final film school project.

For some reason this just made me think it sounds like something out of an Aronofsky movie, and in a weird way it tracks, you know, tragic tale of hubris gone horribly wrong and all that.Eight Bit Alien wrote: ↑Tue Apr 02, 2024 6:42 pm fuck off

Lisa Frankenstein 7/10
Definitely post modern pastiche of 80,000 80s movies, but astoundingly excellently done from a low-tp-mid budget aesthetic point of analysis. You can smell they rewrote the story two-thirds of the way through, but it's good that they do their best to glorify suicide to self-righteous teenage girls.
