Re: Where should I start with The Ramones?
start w/ the first 4 and "it's alive", absorb those for awhile...then get the 80's stuff (seriously). i'd say "pleasant dreams" "too tough to die" and most of "animal boy" & "halfway to sanity" are the strongest, but i pretty much love them all minus "acid eaters" (the only real misfire). and yes, "adios amigos" was a solid farewell, despite the kinda generic production....

Much love for the Ritchie era, especially "Too Tough To Die" which is better than the three records before it in my opinion.
As others (with taste) said, start with the S/T and roll onwards from there. I like everything, even Brain Drain, but some of the later ones have some hiccups..
RIP Ramones

yeah, i like both those tracks, and the BYRDS cover (back pages) but it's still my least fave by them...
"Brain Drain" has grown on me lately; heavy but screwy production courtesy of Laswell..

The first one, and work your way from there. I think all of them have their moments, except for the reverb-drenched atrocity that is Brain Drain.

Are any of these re-issues better sounding? I just downloaded a 2001 Road to Ruin. The guitars are weak and the vocals are too loud. I wish they had the HM2 back then?

Re: Where should I start with The Ramones?
I think there is a huge difference between irrational comments, from either side of the fence, versus recognizing how important and influential a band was to all genres of music. Whether you accept it or not the Ramones are one of the most important and influential bands in music history.
for example, I absolutely hate the Beatles. HATE doesn't even cover how much I dislike them. But I can understand their influence and I appreciate the influence they had on bands who followed, especially my beloved Ramones who were very much influenced by the Beatles. As music fans who generally enjoy mostly obtuse or more obscure music I figured half the enjoyment of being a fan of music was appreciating the history and the influence over decades and generations.
maybe it's just me...
