At the very least, I played Robo Rally for the first time in a while today and seriously FUCKED my friends up.

Just when I get Mage Knight (a few weeks ago) on the basis that it's comparable to the Heroes of Might and Magic computer games, this comes to my attention:

yeah, this thread makes me want to play board games - checked out the top rated ones on that boardgame geek site and thought a lot of them looked cool. any suggestions for a guy who's only RPG board game has been Hero Quest?

there's so many styles and themes that it makes your question tough to answer. browse bgg, or pick something from this thread.

don't necessarily want another Hero Quest. Just talkin' about what I've played before, which isn't much. Games like Puerto Rico and Twilight Struggle look good too. Might just get Elder Sign because it seems a little less involved/requires a little less time than Arkham Horror or some of the other RPG board sets I've read about.

Was just curious if there was a good starting place. Always thought about playing various pen and paper games, but never ran into a good group and couldn't get one together myself.

elder sign is relatively cheap and playable solo. excellent starting point. since you seem to have trouble finding a gaming group you should probably concentrate on solo optional games.

descent requires people willing to put in the time and effort. for the required trouble you might as well go full fuck and play a proper paper and dice rpg.

Yeah... Descent was okay, but I too would prefer playing Pathfinder.

you need vassal, as it's the software all of the game modules runs off of. install that shit and then start downloading modules. follow my instructions above for what you need to play base arkham horror.
all vassal does is supply a digital version of the game. you still need to know the rules, and place the cards, chits, bits, pieces, and whatever else. it won't keep track of the game for you. if anyone has any trouble getting shit set up ask here or message me. it's not too difficult. at the very least familiarize yourself with the module and engine. game rules can be explained in game, but they're really not that difficult. move, search, fight monsters and elders. being a coop game, webcams, or at least audio chat, would be ideal.

universal head condensed rules for the game: http://boardgamegeek.com/filepage/22286 ... ary-refere
Awesome. Probably a good idea that you guys aren't planning on playing until later next month. that'll give me some time to read up on this and get used to it so I'm not a sluggish noob holding up the game.

So any of you dudes wanna do this some time?

looks expensive... i cannot personally justify investing in stuff like that when there's proper paper-pencil rpgs available for free.

despite that, it does look awesome.

i still haven't visited the games workshop that opened nearby.

You're probably better off with Descent. I have The Legend of Drizzt and it's just too damn easy. The heroes just have too many ridiculous powers to possibly lose. The healing surges almost seem unnecessary. I have been playing around with rule variants from Board Game Geek's forums to make it interesting because the game pieces are well made and I would rather not just pawn it off. I'm still working on that because some of the advanced monster AI variants just simply send plethoras of monsters your way and that's just not enough to solve the problem. Either way, there are better board game based dungeon crawlers out there (this is at least the best of the D&D board games).

got netrunner and that game of thrones card game.

anyone here interested in a game trade/sale? i've got some stuff lying around that i don't play. some unopened.
