I've never lived in LA Ross... And I hardly see how you can make a case that I have ever "sold out."

Re: Scion Rock Fest 2012 - Tampa
Live music is live music. I went and saw Yob and Pallbearer at a free Scion show a couple weeks ago and if it wasn't for the little Scion table in the corner of the merch room giving away free Melvins cds I would have never known that it was a Scion show. I think one band mentioned thanking Scion onstage. There were no logos everywhere or little monkeys going around barraging you with stickers and free shit. It was a free show that was in no way influenced negatively by Scion. The bands played great and it was free. It wasn't overcrowded, it wasn't filled with overtly douchey people. Like I said, if I hadn't seen the flyer beforehand or seen the little Scion merch table in the corner I would have had no idea this show was put on by them. Sure, I had to give them my name and email address, but I've never gotten anything from Scion but flyers and announcements for other awesome lineups they're putting on. You've given your email address to Facebook and they do much worse things with it.
EDIT: Oh and the bands got paid which is the most important thing. I don't even have a guarantee that a promoter at an independent show is going to pay it's bands, let alone pay them well. If that's not supporting the scene then I don't know what is.
Ross, if you don't like free shows and you want to support "the scene" where bands pay for every penny of their touring then you should come pay $5 to see B!TM and Connoisseur in Oakland tomorrow. It's 100% Scion and corporate sponsor free. It's even in a shitty squat warehouse.

When Immolation played here, they had their laser light show shooting at the crowd with the SCION logo. I think it happened while Jungle Rot played too.

like blumpter has pointed out - the fact that they actually PAY bands, and do this sort of thing for free with absolutely no obligations to promote their products, get to keep the publishing rights to music they put out for free, and generally treat bands better than 90% of real promoters - I don't give a fuck. They're not going out of their way and being pushy into buying anything. So far the only person I knew that fell for their subliminal tricks is Leon FWIW.

I guess its crystal clear why corporate sponsorship is not welcome in DIY music and if I have to spend my time banging rocks together for you to explain why I don't want any part of it...well I think my time is better spent.
