The shot with the x-wings over the water is ten thousand times more Star Wars (Staa Waaas) than anything in the prequel. This movie is gonna be stupid as shit and awesome.

Not sure how to pinpoint it but the desert looked a bit off and a black guy emerging in the frame with a confused look and stormtrooper gear made me think I was watchin a Key and Peele skit or something.

Maybe because when I heard they were shooting on film and using practical I figured J.J. was going to use similar framing techniques and stuff and that looked a bit modern. It's so glossy looking I don't know why they made a big deal about saying 'we're going for the film look with 35."

"Something has awakened" or some similar semimystical slogany bullshit and then a sweating black dude turns up out of nowhere? For a second there I thought Abrams was going to take the Stephen Chow route with lots of inventive comedy chaos. Then all the awesome shit started turning up and the last scene with the Millenium Falcon flying into the sky with the music gave me fucking goosebumps like a spotty fucking Kevin Smith loving Star Wars nerd fruitcake. We'll see if it can hold up!!!!

And I hear you on the gloss. It's weird because the only non-fucked versions of the original movies we've been able to see are DVD resolution at best, so they've been permanently fuzzy in our experience. For anyone who's not false, anyway.

OK, here's my defense of the stupid lightsaber:

It looks super rough-- even the consistency of the blade looks ragged-- look at it, it's not like a real, well-made lightsaber. I feel like since the Sith have been crushed, this is some evil jedi emerging from the wilds and his lightsaber is just totally jury rigged. Which could be totally awesome.

I like that thinking. For me, I can accept it since it's evocative of a claymore as opposed to Maul's, which makes me think TMNT and kids' martial arts fantasies. I'll take medieval fantasies in space, thanks.
