Dude-- if the US fell tomorrow there would still be storehouses of our military equipment. Fuck, they were still finding Japanese zeroes from WWII like two decades after the Axis fell. And even soldiers who didn't know the war was over long after Berlin fell and Hiroshima/Nagasaki were bombed back to the stone age. And that was on a single planet. Absolutely the empire wouldn't just suddenly cease to be and there would totally be people who got the message late or would decide to fight until they were dead.

The qualm I have about this generally appealing framework is that we see some positively shiny looking stormtroopers of a novel design. If the tables were turned and the empire remnants were now the rag-tag faction... that would be OK, but it doesn't look like that's what's going on. It would also be back in prequel territory to some extent, with the "good guys" already at a position of power.

There has to be TONS of stock piles of right off the line armor that were stockpiled. I still buy army coats from the army-navy stores from over 40 years ago. They were made and never warm. Totally understandable. We have scores of stealth bombers right now "mothballed" in hangers that are still serviced yearly or so. I totally don't find it weird these things still exist.

I am fine with that part; it doesn't account for the brand new designs of the armor. But maybe these were shitty trial design helmets that never made it out of testing due to their tendency to allow the 'troopers to see stuff well enough to hit it with precision...

I generally hate the "cute"-sounding chittering/chirping little creature that's added to so many of these types of movies, but R2 was one of earliest and most iconic of those things, and only a monster would hate that guy. so I'm betting it'll be some variant of R2, and it will be OK

And I hear you on the gloss. It's weird because the only non-fucked versions of the original movies we've been able to see are DVD resolution at best, so they've been permanently fuzzy in our experience. For anyone who's not false, anyway.

There's a lot to be said for watching old films via old and "faulty" (not really) media, but dude you need to check out this:

In short: It's episode 4 in breathtaking HD quality in its original unaltered 1977 cinema version, done by some dude (and a lot of help by other internet people) on an oldish laptop. It's 18 gig but so worth it...

-desert shot with nig nig stormtrooper is apparently an indicator that something big is going down….something scary. however i am inclined to believe that is some cutting room floor shit and won't make it to the final cut. black guys in stormtrooper outfits seems weird.
-robot ball thing rolling through the village. typical star wars fare. droids and shit. it's space so i'll let that slide.
-stormtroopers getting jolted around while trying to skydive out of a space ship. that looked kinda cool.
-dude hopping on typical space ATV and speeding off to what the fuck ever. typical.
-x wing fighters over water with dude wearing classic helmet. that looks pretty bitchin'
-black metal warrior strutting through the woods brandishing another pointless light saber. would look cool in a dimmu borgir video. but whatever happened to just having a plain old darth vader / obi wan kenobi light saber? is it too much to ask that they stop trying to modify shit for the minecraft and markiplier generation?
-millenium falcon flying like a sonofabitch …..that is some good shit right there.

overall….i'm interested. may wait for some of you braver souls to go see it first and report findings.

OK, here's my defense of the stupid lightsaber:

It looks super rough-- even the consistency of the blade looks ragged-- look at it, it's not like a real, well-made lightsaber. I feel like since the Sith have been crushed, this is some evil jedi emerging from the wilds and his lightsaber is just totally jury rigged. Which could be totally awesome.

Great, now we got DIY lightsabers. So the Sith turned from a evil presence to a hillbilly militia, jerry-rigging backwoods lightsabers, drinking space hooch and doing donuts riding giant lizards.
