The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo 8/10? I think I should give up rating things and just list whatever I've seen recently.

perhaps a transition to an emoticon-based rating system might best serve the needs of you and the community at large

Haha...I'm sure there is, because there is one for every little fanbase on the planet, but I think a Planet of the Apes fan convention would really depress the hell out of me.

I mean, I like the orginal movie...but those sequels! :drooly:

might be a 7 if the ending didn't feel completely tacked on. that could be the source material's fault, but then fuck the material, too. some interesting characters, a little political and economic intrigue, plus historical drama, wrapped up in a pretty cool mystery, resolved unceremoniously, all for the purpose of giving us THAT ending? i get the impression Herr Direktor didn't know where to go with all the criss-crossing plot elements, so he just set out the best parts as well as he could and hoped for some kind of cinema magic. he almost got there. the middle portion of the movie rules. but somewhere the movie shifted gears, almost stalled, and then puttered along to a resolution I didn't give a flying fuck about.

i wanted more detective work, and a little more focus on motivation and psychological development - all that hacking and impossible evidence discovery pissed me off. i get that she has a photographic memory, but how in the fuck did she unravel in a day what nobody had ever discovered in numerous years? and how the fuck did the daughter start making connections before anyone else even knew there was a problem? i know the father bragged about the murders, but when and where did the details emerge for her? lots of cool shit left out, some pretty stupid shit tossed in.

but the Enya bit counts as cool shit. I :theylive: 'd and  'd
i hope the other books make up for that bullshit, because it doesn't stand on its own.
I agree with everything you said here, but I still enjoyed it. Maybe just because it wasn't what I was expecting. In the last 20 minutes I thought to myself "I am watching a book." That sort of structure works in a novel, but like you said feels tacked on and awkward in a movie. I liked the last scene because it set up the girl as a kind of lone wolf heroine for sequels/ I'm assuming Larson ditches what's-his-face in later books. Full disclosure: I never read the book.

What I'm really saying is that it was...

Inefficient.

I felt like the Swedish GwDT did a better job building a link between Lisbeth and Blomkvist before they actually met... can't remember though

Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy 8/10 I was tired as shit and couldn't understand every word out of their mouths, so I was not 100% there. 1 point off for mumbling, 1 point off for [apologies EO] inefficiency (huge plot packed into 2 hours and there was sooooooooo much arty downtime) but otherwise basically perfect. A huge number of shots through reflective surfaces... probably means something artistic
