I combine both worlds. Free to air TV is not that bad in Germany, and even the crappy popular channels can be fun to watch. And I follow all the American stuff I want to watch trough torrents that I watch in the normal TV because:

I AM pretty broke, but I most certainly can. There's just a lot of other things I'd rather spend my money on. I would only be down for getting a package if we were to get Uverse with the suped up internet.

Krieg, how do your locally produced shows compare to ours? The only thing worth watching on regular tv here are docs and cooking shows on PBS, and then a handful of other shows that are 1/3 commercials.

Sometimes people like one thing, and other times people like another. Neither of those people will understand the other.

Most of the people here complain that German TV sucks, but in my opinion it is not that bad, they just watch the wrong channels and/or have the wrong expectations. There are several channels making documentaries and they are decent, there are several decent cooking shows and even home improvement programs are OK.

But people prefer to watch realities and that kind of popular shit, I watch some of them but with other expectations. Some of them can be really sick/funny. Like one show were farmers look for wives, they have to put subtitles when they speak because they have heavy south-German accent, in the last season one sick guy admitted he fucked chickens and insisted that that was normal, he fingered a chicken on camera but unfortunately that was not aired even if they promised for a whole week to do it. There is as well the a "super idol" program where one of the judges is probably the most meanest/hated guy ever in German TV. Some programs where they "help" people, like small family businesses doing bad or stupid people who are totally bankrupt and need financial advise. "Real time" programs following policemen, firefighters, Autobahn police, customs, etc. Programs to "teach" people to shop wisely. And tons and tons of police/detective programs / soap operas.

To make things interesting, soft porn / sex scenes are allowed on TV. After 10 pm there are channels that change into soft porn and sex hotlines ads.

Sports is pretty bad because most of the sports are in paid channels, only F1 is in free to air. But I do not care for sports anymore.

And there is a super special program where they invite super stars and they bet on weird skills from the locals, like a guy who can recognize any toilet paper brand by smelling it, or the autistic kid who can identify a dialed number by hearing the tones and then knows who the telephone belongs to in his whole village, and so on. My taxes well spent.

Right know they are showing a cooking program with German "stars" nobody know and one of them is a midget.

this was a very pleasant surprise when i went to italy. and when i say pleasant i mean totally fucking

i never thought i would miss television after two and a half years...but...it would be nice to watch mythbusters or the history channel every now and then
