Found myself looking at a deck building boxset for magic the other day, wondering who I could get to play with me. This will be with me forever.

UPDATE: This is officially happening.

I have to make a character set in the 3.5 Forgotten Realms universe. This stuff is somehow very difficult to understand. All the concepts and tables are simple but I'm having a hard time shoving all the knowledge into my autism-ravaged brain.

I think I want to be a sorcerer, because they get to have a familiar. Apparently I have to work real hard to get enough stuff, and then I'll be able to summon a magical toad who will enhance my abilities. You don't automatically just get a toad, you can get an owl or a bird or some stupid shit. I want a toad who wears a hat though yo

man, all that stuff just seems too complex to me. it seems like learning how to play properly would be like a part-time job. there's a group in my area that meets at a comic shop and plays D&D, and other board games, but the learning curve seems too steep. am I wrong?

Me either, kruddy. I hope you didn't learn when you left us. Here's hoping my kids don't get into this stuff...

Naw... the trick is to play with someone that knows what they are doing and understand that you are learning and are going to ask a lot of questions.
I would suggest maybe trying Dungeon World first to sort of ease you in. My group has been playing it lately and it's more about the quest storyline and less about the mechanics. So you can see how it works without having to track a ton of stats. It just makes it more fun for us since we are all old and don't have a lot of time to play anymore. The only downside is that it's the kind of game where you really need a good GM. Luckily I've only had awesome GM's when I've played it, but I could see it being a drag with someone who didn't like to have fun and wasn't very creative.

Some D&D purists hate it.... but fuck them.

James is more a "dip your toe in the water" type of guy, despite how he portrays himself on the interweb. Mental illness, fatherhood, role playing, etc. It's all just a temporary distraction.

Curious: Are there any real cool RPGs that don't have any magical/fantasy elements? I mean stuff like elves and magic staffs. Shadowrun looked cool when I was a kid but even that had some fairy bullshit. Whats a good one with monsters and carnage that doesn't have any Lord of the Rings stuff is what I mean.

Some of the ideas are pretty played out at this point, but the lore behind the White Wolf universe was seriously fucking cool. I remember pouring over the source books as a lil shaver. The actual gameplay was supposed to be all Underworld vampires vs werewolves stuff, but the background details were really neat - the odd biblical stuff in particular stands out in my mind as being particularly novel. The smaller side-games like Promethean (about Frankenstein-esque 'created' beings) and mummies were right up my alley.

I've been listening to some podcasts for the Call of Cthulhu game and it seems really cool. I ordered this book:

http://www.barnesandnoble.com/w/call-of ... 821818&r=1

And think it's pretty awesome.

A ton of roll playing and almost no combot. It's largely skill checks that further the story along with sanity points that can randomly generate elements the players then have to roleplay as the story goes on.

There was a western game called Boot Hill I played as a kid that was cool. I also heard good things about Top Secret, the James Bond-type RPG.

I played Call of Cthulhu. I enjoyed it, but that was before Steampunk blew up.
