Plenty of nerds have been whining about this. The actual explanation is that the dude is from a total PoS version of future Earth; the technology exists but he (and many) are way too poor to get it. Even in the trailer it's made clear that the leg-fixin' is a dangled carrot.

Hahaha... the traps are ... UNINSURED PATIENTS!!!!
Actually, the people in the traps are the insurance assholes.

Might actually be fun to see shitty insurance reps get tortured now that I think about it.

I was actually stupid enough to attend an "insurance review" which consisted of some fat old man simultaneously kissing my ass and trying to scare me into giving them MORE money every month. I assured him I had no assets and no dependents and I GTFO.

That's pretty fucking cool, actually. :D
Also, not sure if it's borrowed from something else (as is common with trailers), but the score sounded great too.

I guess there's stuff from the Seven Pounds trailer and The Island's trailer. It works well enough! At least it wasn't the Requiem for a Dream music they drop in every trailer...
The first piece of music in the new Avatar trailer is called "Im Lincoln" by Steve Jablonsky. Originally from the musical score of The Island. Elizabeth: The Golden Age used it in their trailer 2 years AFTER The Island came out.
Maybe that "epic" stuff at the end is original?

Sounds more horrifying than Saw VI could hope to be.

I liked part II until the ending, which sent me into a blind rage because it was so fucking stupid. Ruined the series for me, haven't watched a second of the ones that followed it.

The story sounds awful and the Disney-fied aliens might as well be Ewoks but, who am I kidding, I'm gonna get blazed as fuck and see this opening day because James Cameron + $300 million.

Watched it. Good job Ross. Trailer didn't make me want to see it any more than I already do though

After seeing the extended trailer (thanks Ross) and getting a better grasp of the story I am starting to come around about this flick. It may be worthwhile afterall.

they totally fixed this in the new trailer, BTW

In fact that whole shot is remarkably different, they fixed the lighting and everything so it looks gritty instead of shiny and shitty

Also, more ripoff alert: http://io9.com/5390226/did-james-camero ... ns-novella

It's nearly impossible to come up with an original idea anymore. You think you've come up with something new and it's virtually guaranteed someone else thought of it first. Also lol @ Harlan "I don't write sci-fi...wait what's this? robots from the future was my idea SUESUESUE" Ellison

Hahaha, I don't think it's terrible, but Cameron should be more up-front or something. I probably posted it, but this Winds of Altair book is another super-similar story: http://www.amazon.com/Winds-Altair-Ben- ... 0812532279

The bottom line is that 95+% of viewers don't give a crap. I mean, look at The Matrix... who really cares that it was cobbled together from so much other sci-fi?

And they even mention in that other article you posted that it's all ripped off from Rudyard Kipling anyway just in spaaaaaaaaaaaaace

That article didn't mention that in addition to "Call me Joe" Poul Anderson also wrote a novel called "The Avatar"

Seriously.

Coincidence?

I think we all agree that it's a blatant ripoff!

Anyway, new trailer goes online/HD in less than 24 hours.
