I think you're right about that - and I'd like to think it's obvious to most people... but it's worth repeating based on things I've seen going around the internet lately. Israel (with the help of plenty of news outlets) has been trying to blur those lines, and a lot of people are buying it. That's sadly propagating both anti-Semitism and Islamophobia - even in unexpected places.

Most thumbnails for youtube vids that are about someone building a diorama or painting a mini show a hand holding a brush close to the finished object. I know it's hard to believe, but I totally understand that you used a fucking brush to paint this piece of shit, I don't need to be shown. The thing is finished anyway, so it doesn't make sense to hold a brush next to it.

Moved to my second ever apartment in the city, left out of my backdoor and crossed paths with my upstairs neighbor (duplex style house) we introduced each other, he asked if we should exchange numbers because we are neighbors and I agreed thinking it was innocent. Thus ensued months of harassment. He assumed that I wanted to do drugs with him (I smoke weed but nothing else and not with strangers) he’d continue to blow me up through text, constant phone calls in the middle of the night, and near the end of the situation he was wiggling my door knobs on my doors to try to get into my home in the middle of the night. Sometimes I swore he was standing in front of my door listening in for short periods of time before going up to his door. He ended up getting evicted because he didn’t pay his rent for over a year. Not sure why he sent the last messages but I felt like it was a ploy to get me to come out of my house. Be safe ladies.

it’s actual hell

you gotta use old.reddit.com (and you can make it default to that in yer settings)

can also do ol.reddit.com or od.reddit.com (but not ld.reddit.com!)

no clue what’s going on in the app - don’t use it

they used to have a super clean interface you could access by adding /.compact at the end of the URL, but they killed that sometime in the last year or so

I'm too weak to avoid facebook entirely

so that's anger #1

anger #2 - why doesn't FB have a feedback form that lets me simply tell them the things I actively hate & don't want to see in my horseshit feed. for example: cars, nu metal, deceptive AI garbage (e.g. fake poster for a movie sequel, a TRAVEL account/group posting stuff that doesn't exist), dachshunds, comic book / movie fandom horseshit, the modern anselmosphere, DAVE GROHL

their algorithm sucks so fucking bad - all it has successfully figured out is that I like thinking about Megadeth and looking at thist traps, but I am pretty sure that's true of everyone

If you only see stuff you like, you will get bored and leave. If you experience mostly shit, you will stay longer hoping for that squirt of dopamine you remember from the first stage of the habit. It's designed exactly like a casino. It turns us into hardworking, foraging squirrels.

Exactly like the description of the "first matrix" which wasn't effective.

Imagine being someone who doesn't understanding hateclicks can motivate them, despite having a PhD.

Oh, wait, here we go, here's not understanding that you don't understand kayfabe applies to you explained in simple terms

that all tracks

I presume you've heard about how snack food is not engineered to be thoroughly satisfying, rather it's engineered to make you keep eating more of it. if there's just enough shitty aftertaste, you go back for more?

I love a well-curated reddit/twitter experience, but you're totally right that it doesn't tap into that same need to feel super engaged (squirl brain)

I've never been able to articulate this idea in an air-tight way, but I think another strong instance of motivating toxicity is around gossip. like... we talk shit about each other because it feels good to feel superior. but there are costs when that gets back to the subject of the gossip, right? so I think there's this market that gives you the toxic thrills without the interpersonal blowback: tabloids. I think the british royal family might serve the same purpose, even before media existed: it's a group of rich layabouts that everyone can gossip about, potentially displacing the in-group blowups that would otherwise take place. it certainly seems like that's their function in the post-tabloid world

(RIP princess diana, ofc, who paid the ultimate price of all that toxicity  )
