Lego Ninjago Movie 7.5/10

Kinda uneven, but the good parts were great. The Ultimate Weapon results made me so happy. Afterward we went to the Lego store and some of the sets from this movie are so fucking cool too.

Vision Quest - 7/10

I was surprised how good the wrestling was, although the total lack of any singles or doubles kinda strained my suspension of disbelief.

i tried to watch southpaw and shut it off after 3-4 minutes because the fighting looked implausible to the point of being distracting..

in fact i cant even think of a combat sports related movie i've seen in recent memory that managed to conceal its choreography well enough to not strain suspension of disbelief :(

I don't know a single intelligent technical/formal thing about fighting, but I know that there are a lot of annoying-to-watch modern fight scenes

this probably has a bunch of things wrong with it but for some reason I really like this sequence in pacific rim:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mWY8W7G6DwM

also barely relevant: did we ever talk about this weird VHS demo of The Karate Kid the director shot before making the movie?

i can mostly overlook/appreciate fight scenes in a setting outside of a ring or a cage as part of the narrative or pure filmed choreography etc but once they're presented in a sporting context it becomes too great a weight and the technical side of the film making starts to fray the plausibility of the thing

it's even worse for me... the little MMA training I've been doing the last couple of years has made almost all martial arts scenes in movies unbearably shitty to watch (unless they're wire fu or some shit, which I've never liked much anyway). You should definitely check out Flashpoint. Donnie Yen included groundfighting in it, which made me very happy. Also, he punches people in the fucking face real fucking hard in this one. For real, I mean.

I'm excited. I read the book, which was good, and I'm betting the movie will be even better

I will see this b/c sci-fi but I'm really disappointed that this isn't Marvel's Annihilation.

Kingsman 2 - 8/10

Not as good as the first one, but I didn't think it would be possible to do even a somewhat serviceable sequel, so I was more than a little pleasantly surprised.

I bought thursday tickets as soon as I seen them reviews

I think it'll be solid but will probably play better to stupid people like me who think the original's narrative oddities and generally unlikeable characters are a virtue, not a hindrance

honestly only whee's review matters on this one

five foot two (lady gaga doc on netflix) 3/10 can't believe how bad this sucked and how much her fans love it. it's some kind of monster all over again - artist commissions/approves doc showing how much of an out-of-touch buffoon they are and everyone heaps on praise, while I have a good laugh. it was pretty entertaining in a sense but also extremely cringe-inducing.

man some kind of monster was so strange yet so satisfying... I enjoy hating on Metallica though and I simply do not care about Lady Gaga...

Shit, I'd love to watch the new Bladerunner asap, but seeing the dubbed version is totally out of the question. I'm afraid I'll have to wait for the bluray release :(

it - 8.3

that's a weighted average of the coming-of-age stuff which i thought was bogged down by the murder clown stuff like half the time. the kids were all very good, with the hypochondriac as the front-runner. i get that the humor was there to add levity to a movie about children being hunted and killed, but it was actually skillful. somebody with aspergers on the internet is gonna recut this movie to just be about the kids and the bully, and i will be there for it

best scene in the entire movie was the fat kid taking a beat to look through the girls things in her room :fonz:

I just got my Blade Runner tickets for Friday. I'm not too nervous, if it sucks I'll just pretend it doesn't exist. I've seen the original probably more times than any other movie ever, and nothing can change how I look at it.
