The Marvels ('23 | 105min) - 2/10 - This is the most Disney-fied Marvel movie yet. Absolute trash aimed at little girls almost exclusively - complete with singing princes, kittens, and other very obvious pandering in every scene. It also reinforces the idea that they plan out and shoot a ton of stuff on a green screen thinking that everything can get fixed in post, but then the FX budget gets slashed once filming wraps, leaving it with a lot of awful shots. The best part of this movie was when I pulled out my phone after an hour and found a bunch of Scorpion/MGM blu-rays HEAVILY discounted. I picked up Death Warrant, Death Wish 3, Bucktown, Land of Doom, Opposing Force, Robot Holocaust, Night Visitor, The Cycle Savages, Dr. Heckyl and Mr. Hype, Angel Unchained, and Curse III: Blood Sacrifice.

The Boy and the Heron - 8/10
Not Myazaki's best, but still magical, like a more psychological & allegorical Alice in Wonderland. The animation is ridiculously good.

8mm (1999) - So, um... I thought this was some sort of serious thriller, but this is a movie where Peter Stormare hams it all the way up as a porn director with long nails and a weird goatee, there's a guy in a gimp mask who calls himself "Machine" but really his name is actually George, and Joaquin Phoenix has a scene where he talks about battery-operated vaginas. Yet somehow it seems to take itself 100% seriously, and Nicolas Cage is finding all of this terribly traumatic.

It's actually kind of amazing, and if you thought the Bat-nipples were when Joel Schumacher lost his mind, this is somehow simultaneously worse and much better.

I think I need to watch it again and immediately start with the mindset that it's a bizarre unintentional satire of what people in the 90s thought the internet was going to be like. I feel like I didn't realize this early enough to really appreciate the movie.

I'm also trying to remember if this is the one that ended Cage's reputation as a "character actor". Looking at the timeline on his IMDB, it seems almost like it was too late (it's after the Bruckheimer/Simpson double whammy, which I still think started the whole thing of serious actors being hired for big, dumb action movies that's just the norm now), but he's definitely trying to "act" in this one, and he fails spectacularly. No doubt partly because he's working with a director that's fresh off doing Arnold Schwarzenegger spouting ice puns at ten second intervals.

1. The Danzig poster makes it a good movie

It's true to life. I personally am a product of extreme darkness, and I can't even get hard unless I hear George C Scott crying in a movie theater.

If a detective investigated me he'd go nuts. It's just the way things are. Other movies are for babies

Oh god, I forgot to mention that George listens to Aphex Twin and has a Danzig poster. That is indeed absolutely key to any true appreciation of this movie.

Not to mention the sticker above his desk that just says "Danzig" in a generic font.

i really like the part with the greasy troll markets where they're just selling jerk off polaroids of babies.

8MM is basically an adaptation of this book Gods of Death , a purported expose on the snuff film industry.

this review gives you the bullet points

Robot Holocaust ('86 | 79min) - 3/10 - If you're like me, time flys by so quickly that finding an inch long hair growing out of an ear isn't even disturbing anymore. If that sounds familiar, then you might find this movie to be as magical as I did. It somehow distorts time, making it's 79 minute length feel like two hours, minimum. It's a microbudget post-apocalyptic flick shot on the ruins of Roosevelt Island and the abandoned Brooklyn Navy Yard of the 80's. It's almost entertaining! When I looked up the director, I discovered that he went on to have a very long career shooting gay porn flicks like Jack-off Party at Billy Bob's and Lunchtime Milking Club 2.0.

I set 'em up; you knock 'em down

batman & robin 3/10 (or whatever I gave the last one) watching these again with my wife because we both like this "newcomers" podcast that is running through the franchise. I think this movie has all the problems as the last one, but somehow my wife things "forever" was WAY better. whatever. my biggest gripe is the shoddy "ice". at one point a horizontal icicle on a car door does a boioioioing motion when the door moves. so embarrassing. in a few years there will be a button that has AI replace all the fake ice with legit visuals, and I cannot wait. I'll also happily watch the re-skinned version where everyone is played by arnold. the one thing I actually liked was the gotham architecture - cyclopean figures holding up various parts of the city. someone actually tried; imagine being that team and finding out you were the only ones

Batman 89 and all of its sequels have fucking awesome set design. I have beef with all of em but you have to give Burton credit for getting the look and vibe just right.

I only really liked the first one (mostly because it has the best Batmobile of all time, in any media) and I'm also pretty sure it's the only one I've seen more than once. I watched all of the others when they came out and haven't gone near them since.

I've kind of softened to the idea of campy Batman in my old age, though, so maybe I need to watch them again. Back when they came out I was maybe a tad bit too influenced by Frank Miller and the idea that Batman had to be grim and edgy and grr, punching people.
