Thanks, man.

When I first read that I saw "I dig how you ruined a song..." Which would have been cool, too.

I mean... most of us are going into this with full knowledge that we'll be ruining a song

This is pretty good. I agree with Ross, noise rock ranks among one of my lesser liked genres, so the beginning kind of turned me off, but I'm glad I listened to it all the way. It's a good cover, and it gets really good after the two minute point to me.

And since you guys were posting covers you liked on the last page, I'll just say that I've always been partial to Monster Magnets psychedelic mindfuck of an Into The Void cover:

Yeah, I was going to cut off the intro because it's so annoying, but that ended up being the reason why I kept it. I think it gives the actual beginning of the song more impact, too.

Thanks for the listens.

i get so angry with that cover of into the void because it wholly dispenses with my favorite riff.

My favorite cover of that song is the Soundgarden one.

And good stuff Altars!

indeed!

in the pantheon of Sabbath covers (this was a cottage industry during the 90s...) almost never are these riffs "smartened up" - attempts aren't even made

why? maybe it would be heretical to come along after decades of progress in the genre they accidentally spawned, and just stomp the shit out of their sandcastles...

... anyway, going to have to finish mine by the end of this weekend due to holiday shit - it's not going to be easy but it should be doable... drums and riffs are basically locked, gotta find the courage to attempt composition of this solo and then... oh jesus the vocals Image

hahaha! that'd be fine if I were going for a general BS cover... like AoR and like my 'zig covers, I have a laser focus on this one, and some big shoes to fill

what can you do with a riff like "Iron Man" that'll make it less retarded before you've totally rewritten it? And will your new, less-retarded riff be as begrudgingly charming? I think it's an interesting test of ability to see what a musician can do with an older Sabbath tune.

If you're not creative enough, it's gonna suck.

And if you get too creative, it's still gonna suck.

Do you really think that Ultraviolence cover (which I incidentally love) is a good example of "getting too creative" - I mean it's only the surface shit that's different - the structure and melodic composition are basically identical, right?

I fucking hate Iron Man, but since you brought it up here's a changed-it-an-adequate-amount-while-still-staying-faithful (notes progress the same but with different rhythm IIRC) that may or may not suck:

triple clutcher v2.5b wrote:I think it's an interesting test of ability to see what a musician can do with an older Sabbath tune.
Totally agreed. But even really solid composers have seemed to play it extremely safe on these covers (Sleep's Snowblind, Megadeth's covers, I know there are more...). If anything, when people do change the core composition, I've found it to be a deconstruction of the song to something even stupider! (Fudge Tunnel!?!?!)

[going on memory w/o fresh listens on all of this, apologies for any ignorant or misguided statements]

maybe "changed too much" was an oversimplification? OLD did a great synth-heavy cover of "Who Are You?", and even the cover of "Supernaut" that Al Jourgensen did on "Nativity In Black" is pretty good. But the Ultraviolence cover sounds poorly thought-out to me ... like dude wanted to do an electronic Sabbath cover, "Paranoid" is a simple tune, and no real thought went into trying to make the two cohere beyond a mostly superficial change in the arrangement (nb: my interpretation of how it came about is probably wrong).

I like the Cardigans' cover because it's a good song on its own, but you can still tell that it's "Iron Man". It feels like actual thought went into making it enjoyable beyond the initial novelty value. And Sleep's cover of "Snowblind" is great just because it goes gleefully barreling past "slavish ripoff" and crashes headfirst into "parallel universe Sabbath bootleg" territory.

fucking LOVE that Sleep cover

listening to that Cardigans cover for the first time in a while... it's sorta OK, but I'm generally blinded a bit with rage over the fact that one of the shittiest BS songs is "the" heavy metal anthem known to the rest of the world :fp:

irritate them back!

where the fuck is thor's on-the-brink-of-done-for-a-month wonder project?

drums & guitars (sans solo) are all recorded, just gotta do bass (takes 5 seconds), vocals, and lead this weekend... should be doable

my friends studio where i do the vocals (infinitely better equipment than my baling-wire and duct-tape setup) is in chuck schaffs old place right down the road. unfortunately i work evenings and the dude who runs it works mornings. if i'm off before early AM he'll let me in and i can lock up when i leave. unfortunately the last time that was convenient and feasible, he forgot that his badass biker mom was coming into town for a visit and couldn't.

just discovered something while mixing that made the drums really feel a lot more 3d and less flat.
