It'd be awesome if he was right. Imagine, humans not being subject to the laws of thermodynamics!

Nothing wrong with rats, Riley.

Also, it maybe worth mentioning that exercise can vary greatly based on methods, specific work-outs, calories burned, etc., but a good rule of thumb is that it's probably a good idea for most people. It's not like obese people are hopelessly shackled by lard.

I tend to be the last rat-free guy to jump on the CI/CO train but even I cannot endorse this lunacy...

My key beef with CI/CO is that you cannot guess with any precision how much energy is used during exercise, or how much energy is actually harvested from a given meal, without being hooked up to a fuckload of science gear. You just might have to annihilate the test subject in a bomb calorimeter to get to the truth. Also, CI/CO is interpreted by lazy people as "eat fewer calories" and then they fail because hunger feels terrible and then they blame science.

no one is saying don't exercise. The fact that it literally burns calories is pretty much secondary to every other benefit it provides in my opinion.

OK, but you said exercise is not linked to weight loss.

This is well said. I will never understand what people get out of calorie counting. It has to do more harm than good.

No one here is saying don't exercise. If I want to direct what I am saying to you, then I would go ahead and say that even a "secondary" benefit such as calorie burning is still a needed benefit in a lot of these cases, not to mention some of those considerably primary benefits like muscle development or improved metabolism that could very well help the whole issue in the first place.

Diet certainly plays a big part in this, too, but I think we're still looking at a group of people who are scapegoating rather than ameliorating their diets; it's certainly presumptuous but the degree of "WHATEVER, I'LL DO WHAT I WANT" is excessive for some of these bloggers (note: not the only excess).

Anyone who keeps rats should be stomped into a pit of hungry ones, and then the pit filled with napalm from the barrel of a specialized Prius.

Dude... there are domestic rats that people have been breeding as pets for the longest time, these aren't sewer rats with a zillion diseases and maggots living behind their eyeballs we're talking about here.
