godzilla - king of the monsters 7/10 don't take that score as an endorsement or anything, but this was just about as good as one could hope for? I can imagine reasons why people who grew up loving the toho stuff would be pissed (whee & my friend, for example, were not pleased) but I thought the action looked cool, and I loved the personalities the critters had. way better than the 2014 one, although nothing will ever top that one's teaser.

Climax - 8.5/10
accurately captured the bewildering development of a "bad trip" night, if you stopped at LSD
basically Gaspar Noe trying to yell that life is horrible and weird maaan. but the only people who watch his movies know that
I will say...he split it into two parts, the first being a dance bit fully humanist and self-appreciative...then turned it into a nightmare, with that as the foundation. viewed that way, maybe he's criticizing rather than celebrating?
worth an 8.5

I don't know what the hell is going on with this movie. I want to see it, simply because I'm fucking perplexed by people's reaction to it.Necrometer wrote: ↑Wed Jun 05, 2019 9:56 am godzilla - king of the monsters 7/10 don't take that score as an endorsement or anything, but this was just about as good as one could hope for? I loved Godzilla stuff when I was a kid, but aside from the first film, has there ever been a single entry in this series that wasn't boring and confused? Folks really had their hopes up.

Godzilla II - 7/10
I actually did think it was kinda boring in places and that's mostly why I'm not rating it higher. Otherwise, it's a fucking giant monster movie, what do you expect? It's big and dumb and loud and sometimes manages to be a bit scary.
I think it's kind of cute how they obviously tried to turn the metaphor into something or other about the environment and have Coach Taylor trying to put his family back together because you gotta have a family subplot, but obviously nobody was competent enough to pull off either. So, you know, grah King Gidorah boom boom sploshuns yeah.

Destroyer - 7/10
Clint Eastwood remakes Reservoir Dogs? Anyway, it's pretty good, but also a bit ham-fisted in places, and Nicole Kidman looks distracting.
