I just finished watching this. Visually, it's beautiful. It's more than beautiful. It's a work of art. I kind of want to go see it in imax so I can get the whole 3D experience, as I just watched it on uhh... my friend's computer. The story fucking sucks though. Some of the dialogue is painful to listen to. Some of the characters make annoyingly uncharacteristic decisions. But that's ok because the Na'vi are fucking hot.

Fuck it. It was pretty. That's worth at least five points. I guess I'd give it a seven or a six on a scale to ten. I'm not entirely sure yet. I need to let it sink in a little more.

erasure

I may go see this a third time on Thursday, because more family is going...and why not?! But seeing this a second time kinda pissed me off because while I loved it, it could have been pretty much perfect, and it's not. So much is told instead of shown (Giovanni Ribisi horribly explaining why they're on the planet to Grace, Norm explaining why destroying the Tree of Souls would be bad even though we've been through it, etc). It's a testament to the rest of the movie that people care so little about its problems. But I wonder - was Cameron aware of the cliches and bad slang, or did he think it was great writing? Those sorts of lines in Alien came off better (get away from her you bitch!), but here they seem strained. Not enough to ruin the movie, but it was definitely distracting. Like making a perfect omlette and sprinkling some crap on it. It only bothers me because I like the rest of the movie so much...like the world/characters/etc. deserve better? Like I said, I think over time these problems will become more apparent, but we'll see...

My brother refuses to see it...he thinks everyone is blinded by their 3D glasses!! I want to take him to see it but I don't think his opinion will change much...

dude! once-in-a-lifetime! get your brother in there!

i actually was less bothered by the dialogue on viewing #2... first watch caused a touch of  system shock but on subsequent viewings i knew it was coming and could sort of laugh at it... "didn't i feel like a shaved-tale louie" and "venezuela... that was some mean bush"... these things are awesomely stupid to me

a lot of the human character development was cut for time, FWIW - i'd rather see that go than some of the more freewheeling adventure stuff, but i totally understand all the criticism it indirectly caused/amplified

Yes, will get the brother there this week...I'll offer to pay for him! And yeah, I've been going with the "awesomely stupid" outlook on those moments of dialogue and just enjoying it as a whole...even though I still think it deserves better... :awesome:

I already read it and posted a comment which is awaiting approval I guess?
Solid, fair article. Nice work. However, I am left wondering how a movie that addresses "racial" issues can function in the absence of whites (as you might seem to prefer) when the tension is predicated on there being "whites" and "others"? Furthermore, can you name any films/stories that address/combat the current default mode of "white apathy" or "white supremacy" (in its widespread, latent form, not in a neo-nazi activist form) without becoming a work steeped in "white guilt"? It seems that if one even attempts to address these issues, it becomes a damned if you do/don't scenario. If Jake had NOT become the leader of the natives, would you be OK with this story? If the aliens had not so resembled Earth natives, would you have been OK with the story? I see that you've only responded to one comment on here... written by a "person of color", so maybe I'm wasting my time with these questions.
White guilt strikes again.

Just saw this last night on Imax 3d, packed theater, had to sit on the second row which might have been a blessing in disguise because I had a full view of the screen save for a few heads in the front row. I loved the movie! visually stunning, and I don't really care to nit pick on the plot points. I was very impressed and I knew nothing of it going into it (didn't read this thread either for fear of spoilers)

So, basically:
