From what I gather, they WERE terrible around then. A lot of people at the show talked about how terrible they were just a few years before, and how they kick ass again. I know that around then nobody really gave a shit and there shows didn't draw well at all (my friend has seen em just about every time they played here since the 80's, even when they "sucked" during the time you are talking about), but now they've been selling out places they play and people were going nuts at the show I saw. They played the songs I knew, and a bunch of others I didn't, they played them fast and they looked like they were having a kick ass time. Worked for me.
