One of my favorite bands. Fucked up is pretty accurate. John Balance wasn't exactly as even tempered as his name would suggest. Did you get Scatology in the torrent you downloaded?

Scatology, Horse Rotorvator, and Love's Secret Domain are their first three proper records and most people think that's their best stuff, but it's all crazily different. Listen to Gold is the Metal and you'll hear where all three of them meet (there are demos, versions, and songs from all three periods on that one, but it's a super fucked up record that's pretty hard to listen to from start to finish).

After that they went in all sorts of cool directions. Most of what I listen to on a regular basis comes from after 1991, even if some of them are collections that gather odds and ends from earlier. They completely reinvented themselves sometime around 1997 or so and released a series of "seasonal" EPs that kick a ton of ass. I think I like those even more than Scatology or Love's Secret Domain, but that's about the time I started listening to them closely... and the summer EP was one of the first things I owned by them that wasn't Horse Rotorvator (I had to pay out the ass to get ahold of their shit in St. Louis...)....

The Musick to Play in the Dark records are excellent, too... all in all, they released more quality stuff later in their career than they did early on... it's just that their first three full-lengths established them as something completely off the beaten track, so people give them more attention than they do something like The Remote Viewer or Time Machines. They're one of the only bands I can think of that ALWAYS changed their sound. Don't expect anything to sound the same or even similar.

Oh, hell no. I figured that out early on. I was just doing a random sampling of their albums; now I'm listening to the full lengths in their respective proper track order. I have to say, "hit or miss" is a really good description of what I've heard so far, but then again, you need to hear things more than once with a band this fucked up. Dark music and 'arty' music is right up my alley, so right away, I was immediately attracted to "Rosa Decidua", "Dark River", "The Anal Staircase", "Love's Secret Domain", the last part of "Tiny Golden Books", "Panic", "Blood From The Air"...shit...they've got a lot of great songs. But I must say, a lot of songs I skip. That's how it goes with groups this experimental.

make sure you grab Unnatural History II - for a compilation that spans over a decade, it all fits together very nicely. Songs like "Red Weather" and "Another Brown World" are essential and it sounds like they'd be right up your alley, plus there are a few snippets of stuff that was originally intended for the Hellraiser soundtrack. I listen to that one a lot.

You also need to hear "First Dark Ride." Kicks so much ass. It's almost 100% Balance's creation. I've been told it sandwiches three separate tracks together into one, but all of them fit so well that you almost don't notice.

"Hellraiser - main title" is really great. So is "Copal". Why is "Copal" on a bonus disc?? God damn it, it's 16 minutes, but it's fantastic. I will listen to those songs you mentioned now, before I get too drunk. This really is a great band. Yes, like I said, hit or miss - but I take higher highs and lower lows over a boring, middle of the road band any day.

I'd take this sort of drug-adled music over 90% of the "classic" stuff from the 60s honestly. Something disturbing and messed up masquerading as something a lot more clean and artistic than it wants to be. Almost makes me wish I did drugs just to appreciate the sheer creative genius, but somehow I think it's better off I don't go down that rabbit hole of exploration.

i know, but there are a ton of those rumors floating around, most of which depend on people not knowing much about either Peter or John - after meeting Christopherson and having the chance to talk with him, I'm inclined to think most of them are bullshit. so much of the legend surrounding the band stems from the fact that Balance and Christopherson were a gay couple and would talk about really bizarre shit or openly express interest in taboo subjects anyways. i remember someone claiming they were into sacrificial rites, though i have no idea where that rumor would have come from. the samples in "The Anal Staircase" are fucking weird, though. not sure i've ever come up with a reason for their being there.

I haven't really analyzed The Anal Staircase's lyrics yet, it was just an immediate reaction that it seemed kind of disturbing to have those samples in there considering the title of the song. Now with these child-fucking rumors, it's even more disturbing. Considering what little I know from the interviews I've read, they don't really seem like the type, though. Or maybe it's a song having to do somewhat with pedophilia, but not necessarily condoning it. Anyway, like caldwell says, you can't believe everything you read, and like Bored says, it's the music that matters.

Also, how many times do they play "Amethyst Deceivers" live? They must really like that song.
